‘Hey. Rob! Can I have an autograph?’
I hear her say as she comes running over to me. It’s my ten year old niece. I don’t get to see her much these days due to OCW and Outsiders commitments, so when I do have the chance to come home, I relish in it. Family is important, isn’t it JAM G?
‘Of course you can!’ I answer as I ask Bill to get my pad of paper out of my bag on the back of my chair.
Smiling, I write my niece my autograph.
‘This is so cool! I can’t believe that I know someone famous’. She says, smiling at me.
We sit in the grounds of Warwick Castle since I have returned home to England for a few days before Equality next Tuesday. I like to take my niece and nephew out when I have the opportunity. It gives them some sort of normalcy, but also it gives me some normalcy as much as possible.
We buy some plastic weaponry, she opts for a war axe, me I opt for the good, old trusty longsword and we battle. She tries an overhead swing, I duck and catch her in the stomach with my blade and she falls down ‘dead’......and then gets up seconds later laughing. JAM G, do you spend time with your kids? Do you take them out on day trips? Do you ensure your kids have….fun?
I then reach into the back of my chair and pull out a toy longbow. I notch a toy arrow into the string and aim at a wall nearby, doing my best to avoid the people walking past.
‘OK’. I say, ‘let’s see if I can still shoot. It’s been a while.’
‘You used to do bows and arrows?’ she enquires at me.
I concentrate on the shot, hit the mark and look sort of smug.
‘Yeah, I did’ is my reply. ‘Used to do it properly with real bows too. I got pretty good’.
‘Wow’ my niece replies. We then grab lunch and watch the famous Warwick Castle bird show all the while thinking to myself what I’m going to do to you at Dystopia 25, JAM G.
As the giant bald eagle flies over our heads, I think to myself how majestic it is JAM G and how it reminds me of everything I am and you’re not. I know you try and do the best for your family JAM G, and it’s really quite admirable. But as I said before, you’re facing ME at Dystopia 25 - not some runaway janitor or some alleged ‘Pokemon trainer.’ You’re against somebody who takes the sport of pro-wrestling VERY seriously. Yes it may ‘just be Outsiders’ to you. But to me, my Outsiders World Title is worth just as much as the OCW World Title. Why? Because, being a WRESTLER is important to me. I never thought as a kid that I would be a wrestler, but here I am. With the same childlike wonder as my niece now, that I had as a child myself DREAMING of being a wrestler.
THAT Edward is why you won’t beat me at Dystopia 25. You put on a mask and wrestle to get away from your life. I wrestle….because my niece and nephew and wrestling ARE my life.
The bird show finishes and we clap at such beautiful creatures on display and we leave. My niece, happy and content that she’s had a nice day with her Uncle. We head home and she bounds into my sister’s arms telling her about our day and showing her the autograph. I then head into my Mom and Dad’s exhausted and in need of a damn English cup of tea.
It’s the little things, isn’t it Edward?
