“Dragon” is a nickname given to certain wrestlers, wrestlers who have gained the popularity and recognition for being ruthless and fierce, there have been many to earn the mantle, with the name either being passed from dragon to dragon or earned through training and championships. A lot more prominent in Japan than it is here. I call myself the “Canadian Dragon”, as a way stand out from my peers, wrestling in Canada I had to find a way to stand out from the other wrestlers. For a while I couldn’t figure out why I was getting hate from some of the vets, I wanted to be liked by the entire locker room wherever I went. But nobody wanted to give me my respect, so I paid my dues for a long time, years of getting the rookie treatment. It was like that for a long time… I was tape trading with some friends, and one gave me a extra special tape. “Tatsumi Fujinami VS Ric Flair for the WCW Worlds Championship” Super Brawl 1991. I was captivated… I must have watched it 100 times, they called Fujinami… The Dragon, because of his pride and Strength, he was a legend in Japan holding multiple World Titles. When he retired there had to be a new Dragon, fast forward to February 23rd, 2002. The first ever Roh show. I was in Philly for my sister’s wedding, I got there a day early so I needed to kill some time, a poster caught my eye. “The Era Of Honor Begins, “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson Vs Christopher Daniels Vs Low-Ki”. One of the greatest matches I’ve ever seen, Danielson flew around the ring like a tornado, his combination of strikes and holds was incredible, he had a counter to everything. So now I head back to Canada, still pursuing this idea of wanted to pay my dues and be respected. So, I looked at myself in the mirror, and I realized that I need to change my view. From that day forward I became “The Canadian Dragon” I would carry the Pride I have for my country and for myself in that nickname, a name that has so much legacy and history that I couldn’t fail. And I didn’t, I scratched and clawed my way through the Canadian independent circuit. Than I was approached by OCW… and the rest is history.
