The LEO is back and he’s here with another list! Access Denied is JUST around the corner (thoughts and prayers to our BRAVE leader). So, why not have some fun and rank the top ten OCW Champions of all time?
OCW Champion Outcast will defend his OCW Title against Mario Maurako at Access Denied in one of the most anticipated matchups of all time. Outcast is already establishing his own legacy as an all-time great in OCW...a win over Mario would merely cement that.
However, should Mario win...his OCW resume would be complete. Where would it place him on a list like this? Pretty high, one would think.
Anyway, these are just MY opinions...there are at least 10 other names who could have found their way on this list. So, let’s get started.
10) Alice Knight
One of only two women to ever hold the OCW Title. Alice Knight is the most popular wrestler in OCW history. The fans love her. Smith loves her. Hood hates her so much he probably loves her. She’s been over like mutha fuckin grover ever since her debut in the company. Her OCW Title win over PerZag and Bob Grenier at Monday Night Massacre in 2017 was merely icing on the cake.
9) Bob Grenier
Speaking of Mr. Grenier...our first (and possibly last) Canadian hits the list. Bob Grenier was one of several popular underdog stories in OCW. He began as a relative unknown before vaulting to the top of the promotion and facing Scott Syren and Chad Vargas at Clash at the Coast. Bob would come up short but he left with experience and OCW’s most bitter rivalry (versus Chad). A rivalry that culminated in 2015 at Hood Rich when Bob Grenier would end the OCW Title reign of his SUPER enemy, Chad Vargas.
8) The Big Bifford
It’s been a while since the OCW Title has been around Bifford’s waist. And, in that time, he’s murdered a lot of people. Like, a lot of people. But, despite his violent shenanigans, The Big Bifford was once THE MAN in OCW. In 2001 at FrostBite 3 he defeated Handy Man and Playboy G to claim his first and only OCW Title victory. Will the big man ever return to become a two-time champion? Maybe. Maybe not. Regardless, he remains one of the most popular names in OCW history. Classic OCW, baby.
7) Chad Vargas
They don’t get more polarizing than Chad Vargas. You either love Chad Vargas. Or you really, really, really, really, REALLY fucking hate him. Regardless, the man can wrestle. Vargas, like Grenier, emerged as a potential star in late 2014 by challenging Scott Syren for the Western Championship at Clash at the Coast. And, while he came up short, the effort he showed was merely a preview for what was to come. Vargas won the OCW Title at Revenge in 2015 and carried the company on his back that entire year. Very few men can carry a company the way Vargas did in 2015 which is why he has claimed the 7th spot on this list. Will Vargas get a second OCW Title run? He’s got a shot to get a pinfall or submission away from doing so if he can defeat Curt Canon at Access Denied.
6) Outcast
Yep. There he is. The man. The current OCW Champion. As previously mentioned with Vargas, it isn’t often you find a wrestler capable of carrying an entire promotion on their back...but Outcast did just that in 2021. A year that featured more controversy outside the ring than in it, Outcast remained focused and managed to carry the OCW Title throughout most of the year. He enters 2022 as a two-time OCW Champion with a stack of Hall of Famers knocking at his door. Will Outcast continue to ascend this list, establishing himself as, possibly, the greatest OCW Champion of all time? He’s got a shot.
5) Mack O’Connor
Ah, Mack O’Connor. OCW’s favorite, high-functioning alcoholic. He’s in prison somewhere, I think. But he’ll probably get released whenever it’s convenient for that to happen. Why? Because that’s how shit works around here. Anyway, Mack earned the OCW Title quicker than most (and probably all) by entering Last Man Standing in 2014 and winning the entire tournament for the vacant OCW Title. It came so quick, in fact, that many people shrugged it off as a fluke. The ‘fluke’ narrative plagued Mack for years until he proved he was, indeed, one of the all time greats as he dethroned the undefeated tyrant, Mike Best in 2019 to claim his second OCW Championship. This cemented Mack O’Connor as a top-five OCW Champion.
4) Paul Paras
It’s rare you’ll find someone with a 20-year gap in between title wins but that’s pretty much what we got with ‘Perfect’ Paul Paras. Paras joined OCW in 2000 with Mario Maurako and the two dominated the tag team division. And, like most tag teams, they soon split to seek individual glory. Most thought Mario would be the future OCW Champion but it was Paras who would defeat the unstoppable Everlast in 2001 to become OCW Champion. Paras never lost the belt in the ring. He had a few more opportunities to become a two-time champion, namely a match against Scott Syren at Sinful Nature 4, but came up short. So, why is he so high on this list? Well, fast forward to 2019...an older, wiser Paras made his shocking return to OCW and won Death March by outlasting 31 other competitors to earn a shot at the unbeatable Champion, Matt Meyhu. Paras did what no other wrestler could do. He defeated ‘The Marvel’ and took down the OCW Title for a second time. As far as talent goes, Paul Paras is second to none. One of the truly all-time greats.
3) Lurrr
If/when Lurrr reads this I’m sure I’ll receive a ‘fuck off’ message, haha. But, hey, three is still pretty damn high! A spot worthy of the first champion in company history. Without Lurrr, there would be no OCW. Lurrr would lose his OCW Title in shocking fashion shortly after winning it to Curt Canon (named DareDevil at the time). He’d then go two years without winning it again. The drought pushed people to call Lurrr overrated. A man who took advantage of an infantile promotion. Well, that all changed at Rolling Thunder 2 in 2002 when Lurrr took down one of the all-time greats in this sport, Andy Murray to claim his third OCW Title. Anybody who can defeat the legendary Scotsman is worthy enough for this list...but to tack that on to being the first ever OCW Champion and original pillar of this great promotion? Yea, that warrants a spot in the top 3. Lurrr will return to OCW Pay Per View at Access Denied as he stands in Mario Maurako’s corner.
2) Scott Syren
SYREN ISN’T NUMBER ONE? WHAT THE HELL! Syren is OCW’s favorite son. Yes, we all know that. He’s been given more love by this company than a moderately attractive woman inside a gaming community. But, what can I say? It’s been years since we’ve seen the LEGEND. And, the last few times we have...it’s been clear he isn’t what he used to be. However, let’s state what’s factual...Scott Syren transcended OCW. When he became OCW Champion, talent from all over wanted to join and challenge the unparalleled talent. He’s defeated them all. There isn’t a name in OCW history who doesn’t know what it’s like to job out to Syren. Most are defeated before they ever step into the ring with this man. He’s carried the promotion through multiple runs, including OCW’s renaissance in 2014. His final OCW Title victory came in 2005 when he defeated Paul Paras at Sinful Nature IV. However, if you were to ask Syren, he remains OCW Champion today, carrying the REAL OCW Title belt around his naked waist.
1) Matt Meyhu
I wasn’t sure I’d ever see a name bump Scott Syren from #1 but if anybody could do it, it’s this man. The LIME KING. Matt Meyhu joined OCW in 2017 when the promotion needed a jolt. He entered alongside CJ O’Donnell and The Incredible One. It was clear, from the start, that Meyhu was a franchise player. What happened next will likely never be replicated. Matt Meyhu went on an undefeated singles streak that lasted almost two years. He beat every wrestler put in front of him. He dominated. His dominance was so legendary that names from all over the promotion signed up just so they could get the opportunity to face ‘The Marvel’. Meyhu even took down the unbeatable Scott Syren in late 2018. He finally succumbed to Paul Paras in January 2019, ending the most impressive run in OCW history. Meyhu is currently the Hall of Fame Champion and capable of returning at any time. If and when he does, there is nothing that indicates he won’t dominate as he did before. Matt Meyhu not only carried this company, but he did so for two years. His talent, dominance, and loyalty to OCW are why he holds down the top spot on this list.
So, there you have it...the top ten OCW Champions as ranked by THE LEO. Can it change? Yes. Will it? I certainly hope so!
2022 features a ton of marquee names...three of whom are already on this very list. Will Vargas, Grenier, and Outcast improve their legacies and climb this list, enriching their Hall of Fame reputations? Or, will a new name emerge and threaten to dethrone The Marvel as the greatest OCW Champion of all time?
That’s what makes this so exciting.
The pieces are on the board.
Let the game begin.
