PROLOGUE
It seemed like Tokyo, Japan was just crawling with gangs these days. Kenshin could not go anywhere without running into a band of hoodlums who wanted nothing but to beat him down and take whatever money he had on him, which wasn’t much at all. Fortunately, Takamura could usually defend himself well enough to get away from his attackers. Unfortunately for our hero, there were always exceptions.
The streets were dangerous especially in the alleyways that were veiled in shadows. That’s where Tokyo’s thugs lingered and loitered until some poor, unsuspecting bastard wandered into their line of sight.
SCENE 1
Blue smoke snaked toward the night time heavens of the bright skyline that was Tokyo, Japan. The smoke drifted off into the atmosphere, leaving the mouth it had escaped from far behind, far below in a dark alleyway.
A hand flicked away the butt of the cigarette which had no doubt been the starting point for the smoke that had just left on its journey toward the invisible stars. Meanwhile, the full moon taunted the stars because it was actually visible over the bright city lights of Japan’s capital city. As the cigarette flipped through the air, sparks falling from the cherry of the butt caused a bright orange tail to form before it slammed into the wall and bounced off only to meet the wet ground which dowsed out the cherry with a faint “tssssss!”
“Come on, guys.”
A teenage Japanese girl with long dark hair and a school outfit on attempted to hurry past the mouth of the alleyway, but alas, its dangers swallowed her up. The hoodlums had her surrounded. There were three of them and only one of her. Unfortunately for the teenage girl, passers-by just ignored her situation, not wanting to get themselves caught up into whatever was going for whatever their selfish reason might be.
The hoodlum who fancied himself the leader, Eiji Shinoru, stepped forward with a sly smirk on his face. He grabbed the girl around her waist and pulled her closer to him.
Eiji Shinoru: “How about you let me take you out, babe?”
Based on the girl’s body language, she didn’t want to go out with Eiji, but Eiji didn’t take hints too well apparently. That much was obvious when Eiji tried to pull her closer to him.
“Oh, come on. We can have some fun and then, if you’re lucky… we can get down to some real business.”
From afar, Kenshin Takamura watched in disgust as Eiji moved his hand up under the girl’s skirt. She screamed in horror as tears began to slip down her cheeks. Takamura decided he couldn’t just idly stand-by and let this happen. His disgust had extended to those who passed by the scene without so much as a word. Takamura spat to the ground at the foot of someone moving away from the damsel-in-distress. Kenshin Takamura would not just pass this by. Not a chance.
Kenshin Takamura: “I would say she is not interested.”
This caught Eiji’s attention. Kenshin and Eiji knew one another as they both had gone to the same high school together, and that never really got along there either. Eiji and his two buddies all were glared at Takamura, but it didn’t seem to phase him.
After a moment, Eiji’s glare became a confident, no, cocky smirk.
Eiji Shinoru: “Well, take a look at the knight in shining armor. How would you know she doesn’t like my delicate touch?”
At this point, Eiji had his arm around the girl’s waist with her side-by-side with him. As he spoke, his free hand caressed her smooth, youthful skin as a single tear ran down her cheek, ending at the corner of her mouth. She tried to fight back the hysterical crying that threatened to overtake her.
Kenshin Takamura: “Look, Shinoru, this isn’t right. Let her go.”
Unexpectedly, Eiji Shinoru did exactly as Kenshin had demanded, he released her, shoving her in Takamura’s direction. As she stumbled toward him, Kenshin reached out and caught her before she was able to lose her balance. Takamura’s dark eyes remained on Eiji for the time being, but the tables abruptly turned when the girl struck Takamura in the groin. His eyes widened with surprise and pain as he bent over, trying to catch his breath.
Before Kenshin knew it, he was surrounded by Eiji Shinoru and his two moron buddies. At first, they just put the boots to him with kick after kick after kick. Kenshin attempted to push himself to feet, but he was suddenly helped up to his knees by Eiji’s friends. They held him by his arms as he tried to catch his focus so he could see clearly. He could hear them laughing at him, and when he finally cleared his vision, as slap from the teenage girl sent him reeling once more.
After another moment, which seemed like hours to Kenshin, his visioned cleared again only to see Eiji’s knee coming up to meet his face, breaking his nose, and sending a spray of blood from his face as his head fell away from the knee strike. Kenshin’s head whipped backward from the impact as Eiji’s lackies released him and gravity took effect. The pain in his nose was so intense that he couldn’t even feel it when his head bounced off the concrete underneath him.
Kenshin groaned as he tried to look around, but couldn’t see clearly partly because his eyes were filthy with his own blood. Suddenly, another voice chimed in from the direction Kenshin believed he had come from. He couldn’t tell for sure since his sense of direction was off in his current state.
“Why don’t we even this up a little bit?”
Kenshin knew the voice. He couldn’t quite put a name or face to it right then though. His mind was completely out of whack at that point. Who had come to his rescue?
The only thing Kenshin could make out was fists and kicks being thrown and bodies dropping limp beside him. There was even blood that didn’t belong to him. A female scream of pure terror. It was the teenager that had double-crossed him after he had come to rescue her. How could he have been so stupid?
Takamura was suddenly brought out of his thoughts when two sets of strong arms pulled him easily to his feet. He was being supported by two rather large people.
“Takamura, are you alive?”
Kenshin’s head moved almost as if it were the head of a bobble-head doll. He just couldn’t keep his neck from wobbling to and fro. Every time his head moved, it seemed as though his eyes were going to the opposite way of his head, making it impossible to make out who was speaking to him. He could definitely tell that it wasn’t Eiji Shinoru’s voice.
It took some time, but he finally was able to stabilize his vision only to be surprised by who was staring him directly in the face, drawing a gasp from Kenshin.
Kenshin Takamura: “Sho… Urigame!?”
For a moment, Kenshin believed he had either been hit entirely too hard to the point that he was hallucinating or that he was in a coma and this was all a nightmare that he was stuck in until somehow, he would hopefully awaken. Neither was the case though…
Sho Urigame: “Who were you expecting, Takamura? Batman?”
SCENE 2
You turn the key in the ignition of your car which, in turn, cranks up the engine of your vehicle. It’s a great day because your car sounds like it’s running beautifully after that tune-up you had done to the car. As you begin to back out of your parking spot, he realize the mechanic had changed the channel of your radio from your favorite rock station.
Using the channel control on your steering wheel, you click up a couple of times then come to the appropriate station. With a glance at the digital clock, you notice that it’s time for the professional wrestling radio show that’s broadcasted throughout most of the country. Who will they have on this time, you wonder as the station comes through your speakers. Commercials; what a let down, but you’re committed because you have a feeling that they will have an interesting interview this time around.
After a couple more commercials, you hear that familiar radio voice, saying the name of the radio show.
“Slam Radio with Brody Starr and Jack Cisco!”
Brody Starr: “Welcome back to the show, jabronis! Sorry about the wait, we had to pay some bills.”
Jack Cisco: “And do we have a treat for you!”
Brody Starr: “Well, that really depends. If you really fancy yourself a wrestling fan, this should be a treat, but, y’know, you can never really tell with the fans these days. I mean, people have terrible taste in who they cheer for.”
Jack Cisco: “What do you mean?”
Brody Starr: “Nevermind. Who’s our guest today?”
Jack Cisco: “One of the biggest stars in a returning and rising promotion known as OCW and around the world, “Tokyo Tiger” Kenshin Takamura.”
Brody Starr: “Does he speaka’ Engrish?”
Jack Cisco: “Really, Brody? Really? You do realize he’s already on the line with us, right?”
Brody Starr: “Uhh… Let’s just move on to the interview, shall we?”
By Brody’s nervous voice, you can tell that he’s a little uneasy about talking to Kenshin Takamura after his comment despite the fact that Kenshin is obviously in another state than them.
Jack Cisco: “So without any further delay, welcome to the show, Kenshin.”
Kenshin Takamura: “Thank you. Glad you guys decided to contact me and that I could take the time to join you.”
Jack Cisco: “You have been very busy lately. I mean, you won a Battle Royal to get a shot at the OCW Internet Championship and eventually went on to win the Internet title, going 7 - 0 in your first couple months in OCW.”
Kenshin Takamura: “Yeah, but me going 7 - 0 does not do the competition in OCW justice. Despite it being a small promotion right now, it is home to some of the most talented wrestlers in the world.”
Jack Cisco: “That’s saying something coming from you.”
Brody Starr: “Wait, really? Didn’t OCW have its heyday like four score and seven years ago then go out of business?”
Jack Cisco: “No, Abe. OCW went out of business about ten years ago, but President Dean found funding to return Online Championship Wrestling to the independent scene. They have had multiple financial backers up until this point, including a couple months ago, Kenshin’s opponent at the upcoming episode of Monday Night Massacre, and, even, Kenshin himself. What made you come to such a company after NJPW was prepared to, more or less, allow you to name a price and actually put your own money on the line for OCW?”
You can hear Brody begin to speak before Kenshin has a chance to answer back, but his speech his a bit muffled obviously due to him putting his hand over the microphone, but he was too stupid to speak quiet enough for it to actually silence his voice.
Brody Starr: “What kind of idiot does that, Cisco?”
Kenshin Takamura: “Well, maybe I can answer that question for you, Brody.”
Takamura’s tone made it blatantly obvious that he had heard Starr’s comment.
“I didn’t join OCW for the money. When I had heard an infamous promotion was returning, well, from the dead, I could not help but look into it. I found out about OCW and read about the history. It was not just any history either. It was a storied history with a diverse background. I knew, if given the right opportunity with the right talent, Dean could take OCW to the top again and even to higher heights than Online Championship Wrestling’s prior run ten years back. I wanted to do more than just be talent though so I put my money into the company.”
Jack Cisco: “What did that money go to, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Kenshin Takamura: “Not at all. I have a cousin who happens to work for Sony so I was able to get a good deal on some much needed electronics including the OCW Tron. I was also able to get a rather advanced pyrotechnics system for the set-up.”
Brody Starr: “Not a bad way to spend some money. Especially if you’re a pyromaniac like me.”
Kenshin Takamura: “And people like you are exactly why we have a barrier separating the crowd from the pyrotechnics.”
Brody Starr: “Lame.”
Jack Cisco: “Wow, you must have really lightened the load for Dean then. That sort of technology are things that most independent leagues only dream of, and you procured them with ease.”
Brody Starr: “I bet it was stolen, wasn’t it? Don’t lie.”
Kenshin Takamura: “Not everyone shares your life choices, Starr. I had no issue spending my money on OCW because I believe in the promotion I call home.”
Jack Cisco: “As I was saying earlier, you aren’t the only talent that has put their money on the line for OCW. Your opponent, Bobbinette Carey, has also invested in OCW at President Dean’s request. Must be kind of interesting going head-to-head now, huh?”
Kenshin Takamura: “From what I have witnessed, Miss Carey is a talented competitor. She gave Mario Marauko a bit of a scare when they faced off at OCW Resurrection.”
Brody Starr: “Oh, come on, Kenshin. Cut the crap! She’s a woman! Women are the weaker sex!”
Jack Cisco: “Brody, tha-”
Kenshin cuts in before Cisco can finish his statement.
Kenshin Takamura: “Listen, Starr, you can sit around and believe whatever you want about women in wrestling, but I will tell you what the facts actually are, okay? Bobbinette Carey is a strong competitor, and she has proven herself time and time again. In fact, I believe her only loss was to Marauko. Just because someone is the opposite sex, that does not automatically render them defenseless in a wrestling match. That assumption is probably why your wrestling career never took off.”
Apparently this last comment has silenced Brody Starr at least for the moment.
Jack Cisco: “She is a strong competitor for sure, Kenshin, and you have recently had a two-match slide after going 7 - 0, are you at all worried that you might not be able to beat Bobbinette Carey?”
Kenshin Takamura: “Well, Cisco, while I do have respect for Miss Carey’s abilities, that alone isn’t going to give her the win. Yes, it is very true that I have lost two matches in a row, but change is on the horizon like a rising sun, and that change starts with Bobbinette Carey.”
Jack Cisco: “Well, Kenshin, that’s all the time we have for today. Good luck in your match.”
Kenshin Takamura: “Thank you for having me on.“
Jack Cisco: “Ladies and gents, don’t forget to tune into Monday Night Massacre available to the world on OnlineChampionshipWrestling dot com. Brody…?”
Brody Starr: “ . . . “
Jack Cisco: “Brody, are you still butt hurt? Nevermind, we’ll be right back with the Indy League Top Ten! Stay tuned, folks!”
At this point, you're almost to your destination so you don't have the opportunity to hear the Indy League Top Ten because you're in a bit of a rush for whatever you have planned for the night...
