Path of Destruction chapter 1: "Masters of Macabre pt.3"
Watching. Waiting. Stalking. The thrill of the hunt.
Knowing that the prey doesn’t realize it’s days are numbered. A thrill like no other.
Ever since Supreme Machine had broken out of the asylum, he had been on the hunt. Toying with the investigators sent on his trail. Toying with his prey. Duke.
He had left a corpse here, a message there. Knowing that they would be found and tied to him. He relished it.The terror he incited in those in his path.
The weak ones are there to justify the strong. And he was the strongest.
Physically. Mentally.
But the time to strike was nearing. He knew this. The time for games was drawing to an end. The moment he laid it all bare and watched as the carefully constructed facades of those who would resist him came crashing down.
He was more than a monster. He was a machine.

“Duke’s been secured and hidden. If the psycho wants to get to him, he has to go through us and two dozen officers.” Det. Pryce sat down on a chair and let out a sigh of relief. It had been the largest operation he had pulled off in a long time. Finding Duke, convincing him to take cover and then making sure there were enough bodies between him and the beast who hunted him.
“You have done well Pryce. I applaud your efforts” It was his partner, Det. Walsh who said this. He was seated infront of a large number of screens, all showing different corners of the compound they had placed Duke in. There was nowhere for the beast to hide. Nowhere to run. “Did you inform Dr. Rivers about this?”
“Yeah. He is on his way. He told me he wants to be here when we apprehend the patient. His words not mine. I’d call it like it is, a fucking psycho.” Pryce responded, irritation in his voice. The Doctor had been almost invaluable in setting up this situation, as he had the best insight into SuMa’s mind, but Pryce couldn’t shake the feeling that the doctor wasn’t exactly operating on the downlow. Having dealt with different kinds of criminals for years, the detective had developed a keen sense for people not being fully honest. But what it might be the doctor was hiding was… He couldn’t figure it out.
Suddenly a bell rang, and the pair turned to look at a particular screen that showed the entrance to the compound. They saw the large frame of Dr. Rivers on the door. As usual the good doctor was dressed in his casual suit, with his long black hair slicked into a ponytail and his face covered by a surgical mask. After all, as a healthcare professional following the procedure was second nature to him. Welsh pressed a button on the console infront of him and the door opened to the doctor. “About time he got here. Even if everything is under control, I can’t shake the feeling somethings wrong” Pryce muttered under his breath.
“Evening gentlemen, you got a well oiled operation going on in here” Dr. Rivers piped up as he entered the control room, shaking the hands of both men before taking a seat on a couch. “So I guess now we just wait?”
“Indeed. Either we wait for the date SuMa mentioned to pass, or wait for him to find us and apprehend him.” Welsh responded to him, eyes glued to the screens.
After relaxing for a moment and having a bout of smalltalk, Rivers got up and stretched. “You mind if I tour the premises? What little I saw when coming here piqued my interest.”
“Sure, just show whoever you come across this badge and they’ll let you pass” Pryce tossed a Rivers a badge and nodded towards the door. “Just keep your phone with you, so we can contact you if and when something happens.”
The doctor nodded and left, the pair of detectives focusing on the screens again. Time passed, until something caught Welsh’s attention. “Shit…” he muttered. “He’s here!”
The screen showed a large man skulking through the hallways, Welsh quickly grabbing a radio and relaying a few orders. On the adjacent screen we saw 3 officers in riot gear approach the man, but before any of them could do anything, the beast charged. Despite the macabre presentation, Pryce couldn’t help but to marvel at the effectiveness that SuMa displayed when on the offensive. He grabbed one man, threw him at the second, shrugged off a hit from a baton from the third, picked him up by the sides and slammed him head first into the ceiling. Without missing a beat he bumrushed the pair who had impacted each other, driving the helmeted head of one against the concrete wall, causing a sickening crack. The remaining officer began peppering SuMa with baton hits, but the beast was unfazed, grabbing him by the head and in one clean motion snapping his neck.
SuMa surveyed the scene and listened intently, then turned to stare right at the security camera filming him and smiled, the distinctive chelsea grin that marred his cheeks stretching into a gruesome sight.
Suddenly the camerafeeds died, and Welsh began to panic. Both of the detectives were fast in action trying to return their eyes around the compound when the door to the control room opened. Both men drew their guns, but relaxed as they saw Dr. Rivers with his hands in the air. “Wow wow wow, it’s me gentlemen, relax”
“Sorry doc, but SuMa’s here. He just effortlessly took out 3 officers.” Pryce tried to keep his voice from shaking but the fact is, he was terrified. Scared shitless.
Rivers was quiet for a moment. “Well… let’s hope he doesn’t come here. There’s enough officers in the compound that someone is bound to get him. Order them to shoot to kill”
After a seconds pondering Pryce nodded, and Welsh relayed the order. And the trio sat down to wait nervously, the screens still showing nothing but static. The silence was broken by Det. Pryce’ phone going off.
“Pryce. Yes, that’s me. Yes, we are aware. Dr. Rivers has been keeping us up to date and assisting with the hunt” Pryce spoke into the phone, then pushin the speaker button and taking a glance around the room.
“Dr. Rivers? But Dr. Rivers has been dead for a while. He was found in his apartment with his neck snapped not long after the breakout.”
A deafening silence spread into the room as both detectives turned to look at the man they thought was Dr. Rivers, trying to process what they just heard. The doctor was chuckling and with measured moves removed the surgical mask from his face, revealing the gruesome scars beneath. “We guess the charade is over…” He muttered and charged forward before either of the detectives could react. Welsh got tacked against the console, his spine snapping from the force, paralyzing him from waist down instantly, while Pryce had both of his wrists snapped with violent efficiency. As fast as it started, it ended with the detectives incapacitated on the floor, and SuMa standing over them.
“Wh...why?” Pryce managed to squeeze between pained breaths.
“Simple. We could not risk you two or anyone else interfering with our task. And we knew the best way to make sure nothing could stop us was to make you trust us… think of us as an ally. You thought you were dealing with a mindless beast… So it never occurred to you that we could mislead you like that…” SuMa spoke in an almost mocking manner, sitting down on the ground to be level with the downed pair.
“We had so much fun… yanking you around like dogs on leash...You thought you had a read on us but all you did was deliver us exactly what we wanted. Duke… on a silver platter. How does it feel detective… to know that not only did you fail to protect the one you needed to… but you also ended up sacrificing so many lives for that failure?”
“Go to hell… Someone will get you!” Pryce spat from between pain-clenched teeth.
SuMa merely chuckled at his rebellious gesture. “Perhaps one day… but not anytime soon. We told you that we would come for Duke. That we would get what is ours. And we succeeded....”
SuMa walked over to the console and grabbed a radio, pressing the button and speaking in a low, malicious voice.
“Duke. We know you can hear us. There is nowhere to hide anymore. You are cornered. Out of options. Your friends in the XWF can’t protect you. Pryce cannot protect you. We are coming for you and taking what is rightfully ours.”
“You’ve had plenty of time to prepare. Plenty of time to get ready for the greatest fight of your career. You’ve wasted it with empty grandstanding and split priorities. We expected more of you. Expected you to put up a better fight, give us a better hunt. You failed. Masters of Macabre will mark the end of you. All you can do is make peace with your affairs and take what is coming like a man.”
“Masters of Macabre will mark the end of you. But the beginning for us. It doesn’t matter WHO steps up to face us, who thinks they have what it takes to finish us. They will all fall. You will all know our might.”
Fear us… for the Machine has awoken.”
SuMa put the radio on the console and walked over to Welsh, who was desperately trying to crawl away. SuMa put his foot on the back of his head, pressing down on the helpless man and with a brutal motion, curb-stomped his face into the concrete, leaving him a lifeless, bloody mess. He then walked over to Pryce, who had managed to stand up despite the immense pain he was in, determined to face his fate on his feet.
“One mistake is all you did Pryce… Without that? You might have succeeded. But one mistake is all it takes…” SuMa muttered to his face before lifting him above his head and dropping him down across his knee, shattering his spine aswell, leaving him on the floor as he exited the control room, heading for the saferoom that Thaddeus Duke had been placed in.
