Houston: “Holy shit, Bob!”
Bob: “What, Ed!? Are you okay?” He comes running towards Ed who is calmly sitting on one of the beds.
Tensions have understandably been high since one of the crewmates was ripped apart by an unidentified object. It has been approximately an hour since the tragedy occurred and some of the crewmates are trying to put it behind them with a stiff drink, their first in quite a long time, and by checking out some of the ship's facilities. Ed has been lost in thought since. He’s been trying to figure out what’s going on since. Bob has been a nervous wreck, pacing across the ship since.
Houston: “What if we were under some sort of mind control. Like this is a prison in our head.”
Bob: “What are you talking about?”
Houston: “I don’t know. I just had a vision of something. Betsy Granger was in it actually. What if a tree is controlling all our thoughts and this is just like a mind trap it has put us in.”
Bob: “A tree? Keep it together, Ed. Why would a tree be doing that to us?”
Houston: “I don’t know. You’re right. That’s silly. Besides, the person in my vision was called Eddy too. It’s got to just be a weird coincidence. That match with Betsy isn’t going to happen anyway. If it does, it means that we survived this thing. If we can survive in space, I can survive her in a match. We are in space. I know we’re in space. This whole situation is just weird.”
Bob: “It is. But it isn’t worth focusing on now. Why do you think we woke up here and now?”
The Australian walks over slowly. “We need to repair the ship. An error was detected. It must have woken us up.”
Houston: “Is that something you can do?”
The Australian nods. “It is but I will need some time. And will need to make sure that thing doesn’t bother us.”
Ed nods. The redhead walks over.
Red: “Where do you think it went off to?”
Ed shakes his head. “I have no idea.”
Red: “We’ve got to find it. To determine what it is and how big of a threat it is.”
Houston: “I mean it ripped someone in half. I think we need to be on red alert.”
The Australian nods. “I agree. I’m going to start the repairs. You all need to find it.”
The man with glasses goes with the Australian to try to fix the ship. It turns out stereotypes permeate whatever space universe Ed and Bob find themselves in.
Ed gets off the bed and walks to the recreation area where the fat man is sitting. The redhead follows. Bob looks too scared to follow for a second but he decides the alternative is to be left alone with a mysterious creature crawling around and decides to follow.
The fat man stands up. “What’s the plan?”
Houston: “We are going to try to find this thing.”
The man gulps but nods. “We have to avenge Kristen’s death.”
Houston: “Who’s Kristen?”
The fat man looks incredulously at Ed. “Seriously!?”
Ed connects the dots in his head and comes up with a quick lie. “Sorry. Today has been very stressful. Thought I was going to sleep a lot longer and you know.”
Man: “I know.”
They start to walk, air-locked doors zip up as they do, locking behind them seconds later. The windows start to disappear as they get further into the ship. The darkness that would make so many others feel alone but gave Ed Houston life is replaced with the unnatural metal of the ship.
A low grumble and a sharp bang echo in the air ducts. It causes everyone to jump.
Red: “What was that?”
Ed flashes her a knowing glance. The pit of dread in Bob’s stomach almost becomes palatable to the rest of the crew.
Ed grabs a wrench on the ground and smacks the ducts. A loud hiss comes from them but quickly dissipates.
Houston: “It sounds like it’s in the air ducts. We need some sort of weapons or something. I don’t think we’re going to take down this thing with a wrench.”
Red: “The storage room should have some weapons in it.”
Bob: “Great. A ship is full of weapons and a monster. Just what I wanted.”
They continue to walk through the ship before reaching an intimidating metal door. This one doesn’t have an airlock but a bolt lock like one that would need cracking in order to rob a bank. The redhead immediately goes to work on it and after a minute the door pops open with a hiss that causes Ed and Bob to jump into a defensive stance.
Red: “Relax. That is just a door hiss.
Houston: “It seems weird that this door is a lock like this.”
Red shrugs. “Not everyone knows the code to this door. It’s the only door that is hackproof and when you hold all of the weapons you want to keep that safe.”
They walk into the storage room. There are laser chainsaws and swords on one side and hammers and more practical tools on the other. In the center of the room, there are about ten white eggs. The fat man walks up to them.
Man: “How the hell did these get here?”
Houston: “I’ll give you a hundred bucks to eat one of those.”
Red: “Uh no. That is a terrible idea. Noone will be paying anyone to eat these. We need to destroy them.”
Bob: “I don’t know if we should destroy them.”
Houston: “Why not, Bob?”
Bob: “What if that thing roaming this place is the mom of these eggs.”
Red: “I think there’s a good chance that it is.”
Bob: “Then what if it really pisses it off when we destroy these things.”
Houston: “The other option is that these things hatch and now we have a million aliens on this ship. Let’s burn these mothers.”
The fat man doesn’t need to be told twice. He has decided he will not be eating any eggs today. He grabs a hammer and starts to smash the eggs. A black goo splashes out as they are smashed.
Houston: “This is the grossest thing I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen Betsy Granger.”
Bob: “Uncalled for, Ed.”
Ed shrugs his shoulders and smashes an egg. There is only one egg remaining when all of a sudden it starts to crack. A violent scream emerges as a tiny black alien exits. It starts to walk towards the murderers of its brothers and sisters. It lets out a loud squeal and jumps towards the fat man. He falls down in surprise yelling out himself.
Ed and the redhead react fast, grabbing the more heavy-duty weapons from the shelf.
Houston: “Throw him off man. We’re ready to bash its brains in.”
The fat man struggles as the alien scratches at him. He finally manages to pull it free.
Ed takes one of the laser swords and quickly puts an end to the young alien's life.
Red: “Okay. That was a close one. We need to get out of here and head back to the main cabin. That seems like a more open space to fight this thing.”
Houston: “Sounds good let’s head that way.”
They close and relock the storage door and start to head to the front of the ship. One of the automatic locks closes and a door pushes up. They start to walk through it when the air duct shakes and out jumps the alien! It isn’t the puny one that they saw. It is now a staggering eight feet tall and has a massive head. It opens its mouth to reveal razor-sharp teeth and tendrils that make the laser swords look puny in comparison. It takes half a roar for Ed and Bob to move through the door. The lock starts to close.
Houston: “We have to let them in.”
Bob: “I don’t know if we can.”
Houston: “We have to.” The lock doesn’t budge as Ed tries to open it. “Come on, Bob.”
Bob eventually steps up to help Ed but it seems futile. He walks over to a control panel and starts to hit buttons as Ed tries to cut open the bottom with the laser sword. Bob lets out a sigh of relief as the door starts to open. The redhead is able to roll under the door stops. An audible crunch and human scream is heard from the other side of the door. Bob tries to hammer the door but it is stuck. The redhead looks panicked but is unable to provide more to the situation. A loud crash in the air duct is heard and the three on the safe side of the door accept the fate of the large man. They decide to close the door and head back to the main cabin.
They are almost there when they hear another scream from the maintenance side of the ship. They start to run in that direction but end up running into the Australian man. He has a smudge of blood on his face. He looks absolutely horrified and it is clear that he is the lone survivor of that encounter too.
The four survivors look at each other.
Redhead: “What next?”
Houston: “It looks like it’s time to prove that the best and brightest of Earth are still better than whatever that thing is. It’s time we make a stand.”
The Australian and the redhead nod in agreement. Bob nervously scans the three before agreeing that there isn’t an alternative and nods. A vicious alien growl can be heard in the bowels of the ship as the scene fades to black.
Bob: “What, Ed!? Are you okay?” He comes running towards Ed who is calmly sitting on one of the beds.
