PROLOGUE
One summer after Kenshin graduated from high school, Kenshin and his father, Kaito, traveled around Japan to compete in many martial arts tournaments. While they were away, not everything was well at home. Despite the restraining order, Shinji had begun to stalk his wife and Kenshin’s mother, Keiko.
At first, he respected the 50-foot restraining order, but as he became bolder, realizing the police didn’t really care about the restraining order, he began walking up to Keiko on the streets. This went on for quite some time, but Keiko never let Kenshin think she was in danger because she wanted him to live a normal, happy life. She wanted something better for her son than to constantly have to be her bodyguard.
Keiko had even gone to the extent to serve Shinji divorce papers via her attorney, but to no avail. Shinji was adamant on not signing the papers, and she couldn’t force him to do that. For months, Keiko hadn’t had to deal with Shinji, thanks to the restraining order, but something must have set him off. Why? What had she done to him to encourage him to ruin her life? Keiko was starting to believe that she had done something to deserve his treatment of her.
One night, Shinji forced his way into Keiko’s house, and things became really bad. Obscenities and violence were sent Keiko’s way without any sympathy. Did she deserve it? For some reason, Keiko believed she did. From then on, Shinji made regular visits to see his wife despite the restraining order, and he continued to refuse to sign the divorce papers.
This continued for a while until finally Kenshin and Kaito returned from their tour of the country…
SCENE 1
Kenshin was excited. He wanted to show his mother all the trophies he had won during his tour across Japan competing in the most prestigious tournaments that existed. Things couldn’t be better for him. Young Takamura had a girlfriend who loved him in Tokyo, his mom was doing much better as far as he knew, and he had a great relationship going with his father, though he was still unaware of the old man’s ailments. He just noticed that Kaito was beginning to slow down more and more each day. It hadn’t quite dawned on Kenshin that something could be wrong with him. He didn’t want to think about anything like that, but Kenshin was in for a few surprises over the next few weeks.
Upon getting home to his mother’s house, Kenshin was ready to surprise her. He had a bouquet of wild flowers ready for her as he rang the doorbell, but to his horror, Keiko didn’t answer the door. It was Shinji. Kenshin’s eyes narrowed as anger, panic, and horror filled his body. His emotions were just going wild for a split moment as tears welled up in his eyes. The teenager shoved past his despicable step-father nearly knocking him off his feet as he rushed toward his mother’s room with the bouquet still in hand.
At first, when he entered the room, he couldn’t find his mother, but his urgency forced him to blurt out for his mother.
Kenshin Takamura: “Mother!”
There was no answer which only made Kenshin even more desperate. Had he been away too long? Was this his fault? Those and worse thoughts ran through his mind until finally he walked into the master bathroom to find his mother unconscious on the floor. Her blood decorated the already ornate bathroom, making it look like a seen from a horror movie. Kenshin’s gut wrenched and he pushed back the large lump in his throat as he fought off the urge to drop to his knees only to burst into tears. That wouldn’t help his mother right now. There was only one thing Kenshin could think to do at this point, but, first, he needed to get his mother more comfortable.
Young Takamura scooped his mother up in his strong arms and gently placed her upon her bed. At this point, Shinji was standing in the doorway just watching him. Kenshin could feel his presence. His head hung low as he couldn’t bring himself to look upon his mother anymore. Tears began to stream down his face in a steady yet slow flow. His moderately long hair covered most of his dark eyes as he slowly turned to face his step-father.
Shinji: “Kenshin, look, she just-”
Kenshin wasn’t going to allow Shinji to talk his way out of this so he cut him off.
Kenshin Takamura: “No, Shinji.”
Silence. The tension weighed heavy like a ton of steel falling upon them. Slowly, Kenshin’s head turned up to look at his step-father, scaring the other man because of the look of death in the teenager’s eyes.
“You had no right. You have never had any right.”
The words sprayed from Kenshin’s lips like acid from a pit viper.
“This ends tonight.”
Suddenly, Shinji could see Kenshin’s eyes clearly, and he didn’t like what he saw. Not at all. It was obvious to him that the teenager wanted to kill him. Shinji was going to run, but before he could actually get his legs to move, the young Takamura was upon him.
Kenshin snapped off a quick punch, striking Shinji in the cheek, thanks to him moving just enough to put the punch off the mark. It hurt Shinji, but not enough to keep him from shoving Kenshin away from him. Shinji was strong in his own right, and he had some martial arts experience himself. He wasn’t dumb enough to try to go hand-to-hand with Kenshin though. The kid was a prodigy so he quickly grabbed a crystal statue that was sitting on a table near him and threw it at Kenshin, who took the crystal statue to the shoulder which hurt, but wasn’t enough to stop him. It just fueled the fire that was burning in Kenshin. That fire was growing like a wildfire with each time he even ventured to look upon Shinji.
Suddenly, Kenshin let out a blood-curdling berserker-style yell, sending chills up Shinji’s spine.
“Quit running and fight me, Shinji!”
With a burst of speed, Kenshin caught up with Shinji as he finally attempted to run away, and pulled him to the ground by his shoulders. He hit pretty hard causing him to lose air in his lungs for a moment. When Shinji opened his eyes once more, to his horror, Kenshin was standing over him, glaring at him with whatever terrible ideas were dancing through his psyche. A single hand reached down at Shinji, clutched his collar, and forced him to his feet. Before he could stabilize himself on his feet though, a solid thrust kick pounded into Shinji’s sternum, sending him sprawling backwards to his backside then his head bounced off the floor as he fell back. Lucky for Shinji, there was carpet rather than tile or hardwood.
“How does it feel, Step-Father?! How the fuck does it feel?!”
The murderous teenager stalked like a tiger on the prowl after the man that had become his prey.
“Huh?! ANSWER ME!”
Those words came out as something that resembled a roar as he, once again, looked down upon Shinji. Unbeknownst to Kenshin, Shinji had an assisted opening knife on him which he suddenly flipped open and tried to strike at Kenshin when he came close enough. Takamura backed off a bit to dodge the knife, giving Shinji the opening to climb back to his feet.
Shinji: “Stay away from me, you fucking brat! You have always been a terrible kid, you know that? Causing your mom and me so much stress! YOU did that to her! NOT ME!”
Kenshin’s eyes widened at the accusation. He was dumbfounded for a moment. How could Shinji justify saying such a thing?
“Now, Kenshin, I am going to take care of you like I should have a long time ago. I should have convinced your mother to send you to boarding school where you belonged.”
Kenshin gritted his teeth, and growled at Shinji as he lunged to try to cut the teenager. Takamura’s agility carried him into a quick dodging move, but it wasn’t quite enough because the knife sliced into his shirt and into the flesh of his abdomen. Pain burned into his muscles, but only served to fuel his rage ever more.
Unfortunately, Kenshin was allowing his fury to move him now, something his father had taught him not to allow to happen. He almost didn’t have the opportunity to learn from that mistake because as he rushed at his step-father, Shinji just let Kenshin impale himself on the blade by sticking it out in front of him.
Kenshin could feel the cold steel invade his midsection as his life fluids gushed out around the wound it had caused. A gasp escaped his mouth as he stumbled backwards trying to clutch at the knife to remove it, but he couldn’t quite muster the strength to get it out. That was probably for the best though. Meanwhile, Shinji just grinned deviously. To him, this was the end of his meddling step-son, but he was wrong.
As Kenshin’s vision began to blur, he squinted to keep vision upon his step-father. He was able to make out the sudden look of shock that broke across Shinji’s wretched features as he stood up straight for seemingly no reason. His back arched a bit more than normal as if something had stung his lower back. Kenshin couldn’t understand what was going on until Shinji’s eyes seemingly went blank and he dropped to the floor. Another gasp escaped Kenshin’s lips before he coughed when he realized what he was seeing…
His father had killed his step-father to save him. There his old man was, hunched over with a seppuku dagger in hand stained with the blood and bits of entrails from his step-father. Kaito was clearly winded as he dropped to his son’s side.
Kaito Takamura: “Kenshin, you fought bravely, son. Just relax.”
Tears welled up in the teenager’s eyes as he examined his father’s oddly calm face.
Kenshin Takamura: “P-please, Father. C-call the ambulance. Mother’s h-hurt.”
That was the last thing Kenshin remembered before he woke in a hospital bed. It was all over. Shinji was dead at Kenshin’s father’s hands, but it had been all in self-defense so the police let it slide since all the evidence pointed to that being the truth...
SCENE 2
Months later, Kaito finally had to be hospitalized for the cancer that was taking over his body. He refused treatment though so the doctors did everything they could just to keep the old man comfortable. Kaito knew the end was near, but he didn’t fear it, he embraced it. He asked for his son to come to his bedside so he could speak with him. Kenshin arrived as soon as word reached him.
He noticed that his father didn’t look like the same strong man he had remembered throughout his life. For as long as Kenshin could remember, until recently, Kaito had been the toughest man he knew. He could get back up from seemingly anything, but now he seemed to be but a shade of his former self. A smile crossed the normally serious man’s face as he looked upon his son.
Kaito Takamura: “Kenshin, son, thank you for coming.”
Kaito paused as if he was awaiting a response from Kenshin, but he never received one. Kenshin was too choked up because he had a pretty good idea of where this was going. After a painfully long moment, Kaito continued.
“You have become a fine man, son. Hopefully one day, you will find a fine woman that you deserve. I know I was not always the best or most loving father, but I do not want you to ever believe that I ever held any resentment toward you. I only meant to raise you to be a strong, young man, and I hope you do not harbor any hatred toward me for it. I would understand if you do though...”
Kenshin instinctively shook his head as if telling his father that he didn’t hate him. He couldn’t allow him to think that. Tears began to blur Kenshin’s vision as he watched his father speak to him in his frail state. It was so surreal, painfully surreal. Why couldn’t it just be a nightmare? Why?!
“I want you to have the dojo. You are the master now, and I can say that with pride. You are bound to become one of the world’s greatest fighters if that is what you want. I know it and I believe you can reach whatever heights you strive for. There is no need for me to beat around the bush any longer…”
Kaito reached his shaky, fragile hand out to Kenshin, who immediately took it as if he was going to miss the chance if he didn’t hop to. Kenshin’s tears were running down his cheeks now. There was no stopping them. Meanwhile, his father clutched his hand as tightly as he could before he spoke once more.
“Kenshin, my son, I just want you to know that I am proud of you and that I love you.”
SCENE 3
A video package was uploaded to YouTube hyping up the match for the OCW Internet Championship between Scott Syren and Kenshin Takamura. It started out by showing Kenshin and Mr. Fujita in Kenshin’s first ever appearance on OCW Monday Night Massacre. It cut to a specific part of the promo when Kenshin was speaking with an intense look in his eyes.
“To a real warrior, power perceived may be power achieved."
The video package then cut over to Kenshin and Scott Syren defeating foe after foe. We then see Kenshin enterting the Battle Royal for a shot at the OCW Internet Championship. Meanwhile, Scott Syren was entering the Battle Royal that he became the number one contender in. One by one, the contenders in the match were eliminated until Kenshin Takamura stood alone in the ring with his hand raised, celebrating. Afterward, we see Scott Syren’s hands raised in the air in victory as he won his number one contender’s spot.
In the next scene, we saw Kenshin Takamura and Noah Mackenzie facing off against one another for the OCW Internet Championship. The two competitors hit finisher after finisher after finisher on one another until finally Kenshin hit the Takamura Driver IV to get the pin on Noah and win the match. The celebration ensued as Kenshin was handed the Internet title belt.
Next came the match where Kenshin fought Richard. One-by-one, Scott Syren’s entourage tried to ruin the match for Kenshin only to be knocked out cold with one of his Drivers accept for LilJungleMan who knocked himself out. After Takamura defeated Richard, Scott Syren came out and the two exchanged some choice words with one another, fueling their rivalry surprisingly quick.
After they finished, Kenshin ended up Buzzsaw Kicking Richard, dropping him back to the match unconscious. His eyes then returned to glaring at his Black Out 2 opponent, Scott Syren. The video package then suddenly cut over to a nondescript room with Kenshin Takamura standing in front of the camera with the Internet Championship over his shoulder.
Kenshin Takamura: “Words have been exchanged. What’s said is said whether we meant all of it or none of it at all. Jokes have been made, insults have been tossed around, and challenges have been made. Well, Syren, here is the one chance we both have to make good on those challenges…”
Both of Kenshin’s hands moved up to support the title as he said one more phrase.
“It is time.”
Without another word, Kenshin turned away from the camera lens and walked away as the scene faded to show #TsunamiWarning before fading to black...
