March 3- Hours Before Massacre
The sun is bright and high in the sky. There is smoke raising above a steak house where the Bell siblings are walking towards. Earlier, the two had fought tooth and nail about whether MJ would actually join their family for lunch. After hours of fighting MJ had given up and agreed to go see their parents for lunch against her better judgment. She is currently pouting with her chin hidden behind the collar of her large jean jacket. Finn reaches out to wrap his arm tightly around his sisters shoulders to keep her from running back to the truck, in return, she elbows him in the ribs. Both of them enter into the restaurant. The host comes up to catch them to ask them if they want a table or are meeting someone.
Finn Bell: We're meeting our parents. It should be under the name Robert Bell.
Host: Aah, yes, right this way.
The younger host flashes the two a smile as he grabs two menus out from behind the pedestal, then he waves them to follow. MJ's eyes trace around the restaurant to take in the strange design of western themes along with the slow country music that is playing. A huge grin breaks across Finn's lips when he sees their parents and their mother is the first to spot them. Susan Bell hops up from her seat to wrap both of her arms around her son.
Susan Bell: Finn! It's great to see you.
Finn Bell: It's great to see you too.
Under her breath MJ mutters something along the lines of, 'You act like you haven't seen us in a year.' but she restrains from saying it loud enough for anyone to hear. However, she loses the negative attitude when her father shimmies his way out of the tight booth that they had been sitting in.
MJ Bell: Hey dad.
Robert Bell: I swear they are tryin' to keep me stuck in there.
The two of them embrace, chuckling after Robert jests about the tight fit and MJ responds with her own joke.
MJ Bell: I'm shocked you even fit.
Robert Bell: Hey, watch that smart mouth of yours.
She laughs allowing her father to slid back into the booth. Her mother waves her hand to signal for Finn to squeeze into the booth first, which he does without any complaint.
Finn Bell: One part of her has to be smart.
The two of the Bell men laugh but MJ rolls her eyes. Susan grabs MJ's attention by placing her hand onto her should. She gives her mom a short smile and a short hug. Rather swiftly she slides into the booth to over hear her father and Finn joking about bad drivers. Her mother puts a napkin back down onto her lap with a strained smile is on her mother's painted lips. MJ flips open the menu but before she has a chance to look it over her mother pipes up.
Susan Bell: Before you get too comfortable Madeline, I have a gift for you!
The word 'gift' causes MJ to peer up at her mother suspiciously but she doesn't respond right away. As her mother reaches under the table to grab it, MJ aims a look of puzzlement towards Robert but he just gives her a shrug of his shoulders. Susan sets a bag on the table with a gleeful smile. Cautiously the fury haired girl reaches in to pull out a folded up leather item. It unfolds itself in her hands gaining a very animated reaction. She looks down at the dark jacket smoothing her fingers against it. It's a typical leather jacket with a zippered-up front and pockets on the side. The only difference is the small print on the breast of it that reads 'Madeline-June, Flying Terror.' in elegant cursive.
MJ Bell: This is amazing! I don't know how to thank you.
She grins from ear to ear while turning it around to examine the front of it. Susan's genuine smile grows a little more from the sight of her daughters excitement.
MJ Bell: Finn, look, it even has my old nickname at RCW!
Finn nods his head while swallowing the water he had just taken a sip from. He clears his throat glancing at their mother, who's smile has vanished now as she takes a sip from her wine glass. Finn doesn't comment but he does look back up at MJ and his father. The two of them are now on a trip down memory lane of RCW.
Robert Bell: No, I remember that boy. Didn't you date him for a while?
MJ Bell: Huge mistake. That is the last time I date a friend. Do you remember Jim, Finn?
Finn Bell: Oh yeah. I had to chase his ass off. He was also a cool guy until you dated him. I guess that means I won't have to worry about you screwing up Ken--
MJ's eyes widen as her foot swings under the table to nail Finn on the front of his leg This causes him to flinch and knock his knee against the under side of the table. Both their parents flinch from the crash. A few of their glasses shake but only Susan's wine glass falls over. She gasps when it spatters everywhere. MJ removes the bag from the table handing her mother some napkins to clean up the mess while Finn shoots his sister a dirty look.
Robert Bell: Would you two act like adults?
MJ Bell: Sorry dad.
Robert Bell: Don't apologize to me young lady. You didn't kick me in the shin.
Finn begins to laugh but MJ gives him another kick to his shin. Finn slams his head against the table and grumbles curses under his breath. Susan gasps, giving MJ a warning look before she pushes the pile of wet napkins to the end of the table. Madeline folds the jacket up keeping it on her lap.
MJ Bell: Oops, my bad Finn.
Suasn Bell: Oh, stop it Madeline. Are you alright Finn?
Finn doesn't respond because he is still nursing his aching shin. MJ sinks down into the booth looking down at her menu. When the table grows silent before the waitress finally comes up to the table with a friendly smile. The smile disappears when she notices the pile of damp, red, napkins and the mildly cracked wine glass.
Waitress: Can I get you a new wine? I'll be right back.
The waitress hastily gathers up the napkins and glass before rushing off to throw them away. Susan gives her daughter a look of disapproval but MJ simply shrugs her shoulders. When the waitress returns she sets a new glass of wine down onto the table.
Waitress: Do you need another minute or are you guys ready to order?
Susan Bell: Madeline, have you decided?
MJ Bell: Just get their orders first and I'll have mine ready.
She glances back down at menu while the rest of her family order their meals. Her father makes a joke and makes their waitress crack up. When it is finally MJ's turn the waitress gives her a patient smile MJ shuts the menu handing it up to the waitress.
MJ Bell: I'll have a garden salad with your t-bone, medium rare and a side of mashed potatoes.
Waitress: Alright. I'll get those orders right in!
Robert takes a drink from his soda while Finn checks his phone. Susan glances around the table then clears her throat to catch MJ's attention. Her mother gives her a warm smile.
Susan Bell: So, do you like the new company you are with?
MJ Bell: You make it sound like I do work in a boring office.
Robert's eyes narrow a bit at his daughter's response. MJ clears her throat and takes a sip from her water.
MJ Bell: I've been enjoy it...
Susan Bell: Have you made any new friends?
MJ Bell: Yeah, a few of them. I've told dad about them.
Susan shoots her husband a look but he doesn't seem to be paying attention to her. He is leaning over to look at something on Finn's phone. It appears to be a video due to the slight sound coming from it.
Susan Bell: Do I get any names? Can I meet any of them while we're here?
MJ Bell: Oh, uh, you know. I'm not, like, close to a lot of them but I think you should meet--
“Oooh!”
The two Finn men interrupt MJ with their loud outburst from watching the video on Finn's phone. Susan leans over to check it out when she gets a good look at it, she frowns. MJ scrunches her brow before leaning over to look. It is the Battle Royal. Robert reaches over to pat MJ on the shoulder, when on screen, she delivers her Shining Wizard.
Robert Bell: That's my girl!
Finn Bell: Oh, man! You should have been there!
Susan shifts away from the phone with an ill expression. MJ beams with pride before she leans away. At the sight of her mother's sad look MJ steps up to say something that might help cheer her up.
MJ Bell: You should come to my match and after wards I want you to meet my closest friend in OCW.
Susan Bell: Oh? I...
Robert looks over to his wife and Finn ducks his head down as he sticks his phone back into his pocket.
MJ Bell: You don't want to.
Susan Bell: No, no! I didn't say that but...
MJ Bell: You don't want to see my match.
Susan Bell: You know how I feel about wrestling. It's a dangerous sport. I--
MJ Bell: Can we not have this argument again?
Susan Bell: If you would let me finish! Lord, Madeline. You are the only one with a tone right now. It is disrespectful. Now, you know how I feel about your career. I would like it if--
MJ grips the jacket under the table before she moves out of the booth and tosses it down where she was sitting. Susan stops speaking. Robert rubs the back of his neck tiredly. MJ keeps the tone of her voice leveled.
MJ Bell: We're not having this conversation again. I have a match in a few hours. Thanks for lunch.
Susan frowns as she watches MJ walk away from the table. She looks across at her husband who waves his hand in the direction of the door. Instead of speaking Susan gets up from the table to chase after her daughter. When she walks outside she calls for MJ but her daughter doesn't stop. Susan shouts again.
Susan Bell: Madeline-June, stop!
MJ Bell: Ugh, what? What do you want? I'm sorry but I don't want to hear it right now.
Susan Bell: You are going to listen!
The demand goes on deaf ears. MJ hits her boiling point, eyes narrowing with both of her hands gripping tightly at her side. When she turns she is speaking furiously.
MJ Bell: I understand that you don't like what I do but guess what? I'm not changing careers. I don't want to be a singer, mom. I don't want to work at a restaurant or work at a store. I want to wrestle and I'm good at it! Which you would know if you came to one of my matches. Why can't you be supportive? Isn't that a parents job? I am too tired of having this same conversation over and over again. Okay? I'm tired.
Half way through her rant, MJ's eyes bubble up with bitter tears as her mother listens tentatively. Susan walks over to where MJ is standing. Once she is close enough she reaches up to wipe away the tear that is rolling down her daughter's cheek. All the fight in MJ is gone.
Susan Bell: You're right. That is a parent's job but it is also my right as a mother to worry about you. I know it sounds like I've always been selfish whenever I tell you that I would rather you be in a different career. I only tell you that because I don't want to lose you. Your uncle almost died during one of his matches, which is why I didn't like the thought of your brother and you going into that business. Then Finn had his accident and I was so afraid after to allow you to continue wrestling.
As her mother speaks the two of them move to seat down on a bench located outside the restaurant. There is a pause before Susan begins speaking again.
Susan Bell: The other day your father told me to sit down and actually watch you wrestle. You are amazing in that ring and it makes me so proud of you to see how happy it makes you. I finally gave it some real, honest thought. I didn't fly here and invite you to come have lunch just so we could fight. I came here to give you that jacket to tell you that I will be supportive of your career.
MJ lifts a brow in surprise but it only takes seconds for her to embrace her mother. It is a huge sigh of relief. Something finally gave with the two of them. With Madeline's stubborn nature and love for wresting, it is clear she wouldn't have.
MJ Bell: What changed your mind?
Susan Bell: The look you had on your face.
MJ Bell: So, does that mean that you are coming to the match?
Susan Bell: Yes. I will watch through my fingers when I cover up my eyes.
MJ laughs and Susan leans back against the bench looking up at the sky. There is a brief silence before her mother speaks once more.
Susan Bell: I wasted so much time making you think I wasn't proud of you.
Two hazel-green eyes glance up to give her mother an odd look. It is a mix of sadness.
MJ Bell: It's in the past...
Her mother's hand grasps her own, giving it a squeeze before she nods towards the entrance of the restaurant. The two of them stand up making their way back inside the restaurant. While they weave back towards their booth, Susan speaks again. Robert looks up from the table, that now has their food on it, with surprise at the two.
Susan Bell: That reminds me... Who is this mysterious friend of yours? When can we meet her?
Finn Bell: It's a guy, mom.
While MJ is giving her brother a dirty look of her own and their mother looks rather confused. Robert doesn't seem too thrilled to hear it again. The two take a seat and MJ takes a drink from her water.
Susan Bell: Oooh. A guy and is this guy your boyfriend?
MJ chokes on the water and the glass hits the table with a loud clank. Susan gasps while Robert reaches over to pat his daughter's back. All the while Finn bursts out laughing. Once she can breathe normally again, MJ kicks her brother in the shin once more. Finn finally swears gaining looks from the table behind them.
MJ Bell: No. Kenshin is just my friend. We're just friends. I'm starting to think that I need a boyfriend so people stop coupling us.
Susan Bell: Oh, I see. Now why it such a problem what people think? Is he ugly or something?
MJ Bell: Uh, no. No. He is not ugly at all. I just... Uh, I just, you know. I don't want people... I don't know. Uh, yeah, I don't like him that way.
She clears her throat while picking up her fork and knife to cut her steak. Susan gives Robert a smile while he eyes his daughter. Finn is still chuckling from the odd awkwardness of their family unit. The conversation switches lanes to the up coming show. As they are discussing different things. MJ checks her phone for the time. It is almost time to leave.
March 3.
The camera opens up to show MJ in her wrestling attire. It always seems to change and this time it's a pair of jeans, one leg is white and the other is black. She is wearing a white open sided shirt with black letters spelling “The Best” across the chest. Under that is a neon yellow tube top. She has a grin on her face. Her words are rushing when she speaks.
MJ Bell: Massacre is only a couple hours away and I can't wait to get into that ring. I guess everyone is expecting me to do some more trash-talking to my opponent Alexis Terry but I don't have anything else to say to her. I've said all I can say. I don't want to start repeating. I think that's the problem with some people. You can flap your lips all damn day but if all you are saying is on repeat then you should've kept quite. I have to prepare for my match but, actually, I will say this... Alexis, bring your best or get the hell out of my ring. I won't hold anything back tonight.
The screen goes black.
