=/= Stepping in from the sunny streets outside, MJ Bell’s hair still glowed like molten copper a stark contrast to the scalding, sanitary white walls of the hospital. In her tightly clutched hand, a bouquet of miscellaneous flowers, cheap yet cheerful like the type you’d pick up a service station on the way to a long lost relatives funeral.
Eyes betraying a hint of concern, she hesitates before reaching the reception desk where a matronly nurse furiously types away at a computer clearly too advanced for her use. MJ clears her throat graciously as the nurse gives MJ an overly sweet smile- a smile that’s been trained and refined over many fearful faces. =/=
“I’m hoping you can help me, I was told a friend of mine is supposed to be here”
“I’m sorry sweet but visiting hours aren’t for another hour and a half”
=/= MJ fidgets on the spot, seemingly uncomfortable about making a nuisance of herself. =/=
“I realize that, it’s just I only just heard about what happened and I rushed over hoping to at least see if she’s okay- I just...”
=/= The lie comes surprisingly easy to MJ as the nurse once again gives her the trademark sympathy smile, gauging her young lady and her story with a sigh. =/=
“I know I shouldn’t but… Room 104, it’s on the first floor and to your right. You’ll have to make your visit quick because Miss Ryan needs her rest. You know, she's very lucky to have a friend like you…”
=/= MJ flashes an apprehensive smile before disappearing towards the elevators, her apprehensive smile disguising something perhaps more devious. =/=

=/= Thick aromas of death and disinfectant hung in the air like fog, dizzying and sterile in equal measures. Harsh fluorescent lights beam from overhead, like blinded ants under a magnifying glass people scurried in every direction paying little heed to MJ as she passed by identical closed doors- each concealing the diseased and destructive aftermaths of human nature at work.
The plastic sign read room 104, nothing more personal as though anonymity were a treatment- MJ finds herself hesitating, her lie had got her this far but it hadn’t prepared her for the fact it might just work.
Heart pounding in her chest, she reaches out for the door knob as though it were forbidden and with a swift exhale, she fluidly opens the door and vanishes within before anyone can question her motives.
Once within the confines of the room- MJ took a few, almost cautious steps towards the bed Amber rested in, her eyes sparkling with pity as she watched over the broken form of someone almost unrecognizable in a way. Amber’s crimson locks were haphazardly spread across the crisp white pillows, skin pale as dark rings circle her closed, peaceful eyes- even in her motionless form MJ could sense the damage as Amber lay almost awkwardly on her back, splashes of black and purple across her skin hidden by thin, starched sheets.
An expression of concern crossed MJ’s features as she quietly took a seat in an uncomfortable looking chair near the bed, the wrapping around the flowers crinkling as she moved. Steadily, MJ runs her fingers through her fiery locks before setting the flowers down carefully on the side table by the bed. Rocking forward slightly, MJ grips her knees within her hands whilst releasing a sigh before finally managing to find her voice. =/=
“Wow… I heard it was serious but I never thought-… I guess that sounds a little lame considering I saw what they did to you but-… What could any of us expect though? Them not to be sore about losing? Surely you saw this coming but it still doesn’t make it right… It’s just not right”
=/= A few moments silence befall the pair, mindlessly MJ runs her fingers through her hair again as if perhaps frustration was overcoming concern. =/=
“… That doesn’t explain why you’re here”
=/= Ambers voice rasped as the words were forced from her lips, every word seemed like agony and yet Amber seemed to ignore the screams of her body, rebelling against the excessive expulsion of precious air. MJ looks up from her seat, almost surprised that Amber can manage to speak- her surprise possibly disguising the hurt from the bluntness of the statement. =/=
“I thought since we were friends that it would be the good thing to do.”
“Did you really say friends? Surely even you should know that I don’t have friends- people try to ignore my existence and I tolerate theirs”
=/= MJ sits quietly and unresponsive as Amber still refuses to glance in her direction. =/=
“… So why are you here”
“I didn’t think I need a reason to go and visit someone I happen to admire when they are hurt...”
“No. but if you happen to be currently attached to the end of the dick of the biggest asshole in the company, the same asshole who reacts to failure like a spoilt child being told no for the first time… Then perhaps you might need a reason”
“Maybe he reacted like that cause he deserved to win- instead of a pair of misfits who don’t know the proper way to act as champions. You and Danny aren’t even a real team- only when the situation calls for it.”
“You really want to defend him? Remind me, exactly how much gold have you had around your waist again? I’ve heard of ‘golddiggers’ but I think you’re taking things to the next level Madeline… and for the record, the ‘proper’ way to act as a champion certainly isn’t to snort cocaine and sleep with the most expensive hooker you can find.”
“How dare you!
You think because you’ve done this awhile that you know everything Amber, you think everyone is so beneath you but the fact is you just got lucky, right place and right time unlike some of us who have earned everything they have worked for instead of just turning up and claiming it.”
“You stand there and talk about Ian like he’s more than just some quick fuck and boot… I have earned every step of my career instead of fucking and sucking my way to stardom so lets not talk about right and wrong because very soon you’re gonna realize just how wrong your view is and it will break you.
See, I used to think you were so much better than this- you know, you had potential but now you’re barely above the level of the whores he rents out when you’ve got your back turned.
You wouldn’t know what earning your place was if it smacked you in the teeth.”
“Let’s get one thing straight-- each win I’ve won is because I earned it by working for it. Not because Ian came into the picture. Oh and our relationship is no one business. Especially not yours so, big words coming from you- don’t worry I’m well aware Amber that if you make a wrong move let alone step up… I don’t want to see you crippled but if you follow this route then they will have no choice.”
“You made your choice, don’t lecture me about mine.
You want to play princess? I’ll put your lights out before you can say ‘bow down’…”
“Why do you want to do this? Is this the way you want things to end- crippled and alone?
I thought I could convince you to see the error of your way, to relinquish before we do something we may regret the next actions but I can see you have your mind made up…
Goodbye Amber…”
“Oh Madeline, open your eyes… I hope he’s worth it, I really do cause at the end of all this- its all you’re gonna have.”
=/= Without another word, MJ rises from her seat, before disappearing back into the hospital corridor, slamming the door in her wake. Echoing through the room, Amber sighs with a slight shake of her head before trying to get some sleep as the warm, dry air falls back into stillness. =/=
