Delia Black stares forward.
Robert Shaw’s immortal words from Jaws echo.
Completely blank.
There is nothing behind those eyes, nothing that looks to be going on inside the mind of Delia Black, no thought, no soul. Just dead cold eyes that give off the feelings of emptiness and dread.
Beyond her in the background things are certainly happening, Claudia Frost and Christopher J. Wrigley are moving back and forth about the cluttered apartment that the Influence has been reduced to living in. However, they might as well be a million miles away hidden in another part of the universe entirely. Wrigley even walks in front of Delia and snaps his fingers, but she doesn’t twitch a muscle in response. The camera moves in on those eyes giving the viewer the same feeling that Qunit had, but not silence, rather it is the voice over of Delia herself.
VOICE: What was it that the mouthy one said? White girl goes missing, the world panics. But eventually the world moves onto something else more pressing and more entertaining and the panic dies quickly. Unfortunately, the limits of human thought did not allow for the mind to experience why the world itself was panicking. Let’s restate that phrase in something you can comprehend, white girl goes missing and eventually the world dies.
Does that make more sense to your primitive minds? Good.
Just as the voice pauses, the voices of Wrigley and Claudia can be seen moving about in the background and talking some more.
FROST: I didn’t think it was possible after what happened on Monday Night Massacre, but I think she’s getting worse. She hasn’t sniffed anything, she hasn’t licked anyone, she is even more unresponsive than before. We should call a doctor.
WRIGLEY: You can’t even afford me, how the hell are you going to afford a doctor?
The two of them kneel in front of Delia with a look of concern on their faces. Claudia snaps her fingers in front of her eyes trying to get some sort of reaction. Wrigley, who is obviously way more skilled at these things, jiggles his car keys in front of her trying to do the same. Neither are getting any sort of reaction.
FROST: Keys always made Delia laugh. I can’t believe things have gotten this bad, she hasn’t checked her phone in weeks. Weeks!!
WRIGLEY: Perhaps we need to get a bit more drastic, kick things up a notch, take it to the extreme as the kids say.
FROST: Kids don’t say that.
WRIGLEY: Either way, let me get the login to your HBOMax account.
FROST: Why?
WRIGLEY: We’re going to make Delia watch Black Adam and if she doesn’t get up and walk out then we’ll take her to the hospital. Believe me, no healthy human being could possibly ever sit through that entire movie.
The duo continue to fumble around in the background as the focus goes back onto Delia’s eyes. Once again her voice returns from the void.
VOICE: Hear these words mortals, I had existed for eons before your world was even formed from cosmic dust and I will exist beyond what you all perceive as reality. I witnessed the Great Old One Azathoth rule the multiverse after creating it and was there when the others put him into an eternal slumber. Know my power, fear this warning…I exist not in the spaces you know, but between them. I walk serene and primal, undimensioned and to you unseen.
I have taken this mortal vessel with the singular intention to experience the tastes, smells and sensations this form of life has to offer before at any moment everything is wiped from the map forever. Be pleased in the knowledge that I do not intend to stay much longer nor do I intend upon ever exploring this region of the cosmos. A single gaze upon my true form would cause your primitive brains to implode upon itself in the most painful manner, but not before you’d be lost in the maze of unimaginable horrors.
Believe me when I say this, the two that care for this worn shell could be destroyed with a single gaze, but they bring me things that this vessel needs to not decay quickly and therefore I have allowed them to survive. The non-animal known as Beans? It is too innocent, even for me. The rest? On the time period you all call Monday, at the human event known as Massacre I showed but only a glimpse of my power. I invite you to get a better glimpse now.
Gaze deeper into these black orbs and welcome your terrific ends…
The camera slowly begins to creep in on the eyes of Delia, moving closer and closer as if being drawn over the event horizon of a blackhole in space. No stopping now, closer and clos--
Until the sounds of pleasure and moaning begin? The camera pulls away quickly as Wrigley presses pause on the television remote control. Claudia looks confused as Wrigley has the look of embarrassment on his face.
FROST: What the hell is that?
WRIGLEY: My bad, wrong Black Adam movie. This is Five Big Black Adams, a completely different film. HBOMax has got some strange selections on there these days.
FROST: That does look like Dwayne Johnson, though.
WRIGLEY: Yeah, I’ll get the other one pulled up here immediately. Unless you’re into that sort of…oh, nevermind.
Claudia doesn’t seem to be paying attention to what Wrigley is attempting to say, she’s way too busy snapping her fingers in front of Delia’s face again trying to get some sort of response out of her.
FROST: She’s so pale, the Delia I know wouldn’t have ever been this pale if things were normal. She’s so pale someone might even mistake her for one of those goth people, oh and if it's one thing Delia could not stand and it’s goth. Perhaps, if she looked a bit more like Delia, she’d start acting like Delia a little more.
Wrigley’s too busy messing with the TV remote to pay attention to what Claudia is considering doing here. Claudia disappears for a moment only to reemerge with a large bottle with the words “IL MAKIAGE” written across the front with a brush. She pumps a large glob of the product onto the brush and goes to paint it onto the face of Delia, but before she does she makes sure to move out of the way.
FROST: Whoa Wrigley, would you get a load of this? This foundation from IL Makiage goes on so smooth, adds color and most importantly hides any skin blemishes! Look at how the pale skin of Delia just turns to a radiant glow as I simply brush this on.
Wrigley looks up from the remote control for a moment.
FROST: Did you know Wrigley, that on top of all of that this product is one hundred percent animal cruelty free? Just amazing stuff.
WRIGLEY: Wait, are you throwing me into this advertising nonsense?
FROST: No, I’m just letting you know all of the benefits that this foundation provides to you because we are nearing Valentine’s Day and you should order some for that special someone in your life.
WRIGLEY: If I’m not getting paid I don’t want any part of this.
FROST: Nope, this isn’t an ad. But, when you do decide to order make sure to use our special code ‘GOTH15’ and get fifteen percent off your first purchase. What a deal!
Wrigley celebrates in the background as puts the remote control down on the table and points towards the screen in victory. Claudia continues to paint the slightly skin colored goop onto Delia’s face, the camera once again begins to zoom on those dead cold eyes of Delia and her voice returns from the void.
VOICE: As I understand it from the machine overmind known as google, the term decadence is defined as moral or cultural decline as characterized by excessive indulgence in pleasure or luxury. Is this what you wish for your world? To engage in excessive indulgence and pleasure as your world crumbles? Fine then, I will give you all what you desire. At this next event called Decadence I shall use this vessel to give you all another taste of my power, one that will remind the universe of the Age of Yog-Sothoth who would slowly feast on entire solar systems just to see how many different ways he could make life scream into the void. I shall do the same, this multiperson match shall serve as a gallery of twisted flesh and malice. Listen to the blood curdling screams of those who share the ring with me whilst you cheer.
Perhaps the sounds will awaken the outer gods from their eternal slumber and once again wreck havoc upon the cosm-- wait. Why does my vessel’s flesh now burn? What is this substance that even pains me right now? I am starting to lose my hold, how is this possible?
For the first time in the longest time, Delia’s eyes begin to twitch. Claudia pulls back from putting on the goop on, holding up the covered brush into the air, with a completely shocked face. She immediately begins to call for Wrigley.
VOICE: Have these two figured out a way to hurt me? And what is this being shown on the device called a television? Not only does the skin of this vessel burn, but now I can feel the optic nerves of the eyes pulse pain directly into the brain. This body is being destroyed, they are sacrificing this vessel in order to save the others on this planet.
My power is being limited as well, I can’t… I can’t hold on any longer.
Fine, have this vessel back. I will release my grip and slither back into the void once again waiting for another to open a door for me back.
I will return.
And with that, Delia snaps out of the death stare and she begins to blink her eyes and move her head in a completely normal manner for the first time in a long time. Claudia and Wrigley stand in front of her with smiles on their faces, some of the goop from the brush drips down onto Claudia’s hand which causes her to grab it as if something is burning. She drops the brush and shakes off the pain to celebrate the return of her friend. Wrigley scrambles for the remote.
WRIGLEY: I’m turning this movie off before I snap!
FROST: Delia! Delia! Is it you? Is it really you?
BLACK: Yeah, it’s me. What’s going on?
Wrigley presses the power button off on the Black Adam experience, but as the TV turns off Delia is able to see herself in the reflection of the blank screen. Delia leans forward looking at the make-up that has been painted across most of her face.
BLACK: Wow, this stuff is amazing. Look at how young and smooth my skin looks, Clauds. It’s like I’ve been sitting on a tropical beach for the past couple of months soaking up the sun and drinking nothing but coconut drinks. Is that where I’ve been?
FROST: Yes, that’s exactly where you’ve been. We just got back from the beach.
BLACK: Oh wow, what was that movie that was on the TV? Seemed kind of cool.
Wrigley and Frost look at each other in confusion.
WRIGLEY: You don’t ever have to worry about watching that again.
Delia gets up and walks away, acting completely normal… for now. Not that it will get the credit as it deserves, but once again Black Adam manages to save the human race. A tired and relieved Wrigley and Claudia flop onto the couch as we fade to black.
Robert Shaw’s immortal words from Jaws echo.
“Sometimes that shark, he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. Y'know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes."
Completely blank.
There is nothing behind those eyes, nothing that looks to be going on inside the mind of Delia Black, no thought, no soul. Just dead cold eyes that give off the feelings of emptiness and dread.
