Four years.
In today’s fast paced world that doesn’t seem like a very long time. One minute you’re celebrating the New Year and the next thing you know, Jack-O-Lanterns are being placed onto porches in preparation for Halloween. But it had been four long years since Lilith or Sarah Twilight had spoken to the only person in the world they looked at as a maternal figure; Selene.
Four years without speaking to your mother? That is an incredibly long time. Life happens, but there’s no excuse. Somewhere during the training, and traveling and preparations to becoming professional wrestlers there had to be some time set aside for the woman who gave two girls with nothing … the world.
”You know … I’m actually kinda nervous. I never get nervous. But, I don’t even know what to expect.”
Sarah fidgets with her phone, which was a dead giveaway that she was anxious as she was not one to normally use her phone very much. The beautiful redhead glances over to Lilith as the two of them walk along one of the main roads in Melbourne, Florida, heading to a location they’d agreed to meet with their mother, Selene at.
”Sarah, baby… would you calm down? You wanna stop for cookies first or something? Why you getting yourself so wound up? This is Mummy Selene we're talking about. It's not like she's gonna yell at us. I bet she's super excited and happiful to be seeing us!”
Sarah glances over at Lilith and shrugs her shoulders a bit, making an odd face.
”I know … but, after we got married it’s like we dropped off the face of the Earth. How the hell did we let four years go by and not even give her a call?”
She sighs, feeling badly about that. Lilith just looks across at her shaking her head a little bit.
”Yeah but I'm sure she'll understand that we've been busy… besides it's not like she couldn't have called us. Check on the newly weds.”
Lilith gasps thinking about something as she reaches out and grabs hold of Sarah's hand.
”Wait… she DID have our numbers, right? Cos if she hasn't had them and we've not called her… SARAH!!! We're the worst daughters in the whole wide world!”
This only makes Sarah feel even worse as she holds her hand against her forehead and lets out a shaky holler that is mostly unintelligible. The redhead grips Lilith’s hand tightly with her other.
”We were supposed to call her after our honeymoon so she’d have our new numbers! We … never did that. She’s gonna be so upset … we abandoned her for four years after everything she did for us!”
Lilith’s jaw drops a bit as she looks at her wife and then she begins to cry softly. She was now unable to think of anything but how she'd feel had she been in her Mummy's position.
”Sarah… what have we done?! I… I’m… a bad person.”
Eventually the jittery couple makes it to a small corner cafe where they were meeting Selene as she was going to be in town for a convention. As they approach the cafe they notice the unmistakable sight of Selene seated at one of the outside tables. The fact she was all alone made Lilith feel even worse. She had much more gray hair now, but looked as calm and as sweet as ever. Selene notices the couple and waves, smiling warmly. Lilith immediately leaves Sarah's side and charges over to her adoptive mother, collapsing into her for a hug. She cries a bit into her shoulder as she squeezes her tighter than ever.
”I am sooooooo sorry, Mummy. Please forgive me. Please. I never forgot about you I pinky promise!”
Sarah is right behind Lilith and also embraces her adoptive mother for a long time.
”I will never let so much time go by again. I’m really sorry … there’s no excuse.”
Selene hugs both of them and remains smiling.
”Oh it’s alright girls. Things happen. What’s important is we’re here together now.”
Selene was always so understanding. It was as if Sarah and Lilith could do no wrong in her eyes sometimes. Of course, this wasn’t exactly true, but sometimes it seemed like it. The three of them enjoy lunch together as they catch up, reminiscing of old times before heading across the street to a little place called Air, Fire, Water and Earth … a metaphysical and occult shop. This indeed was just like old times, except that this shop wasn’t Selene’s.
”I wouldn’t think you’d wanna come to a place like this, since you own one of your own.”
”It’s always nice to see what others of the trade have come across.”
Lilith now grips to Sarah tighter than ever as she leads the way around the shop. Despite the fact that she was literally married to a witch this stuff still kind of gave her the creeps. Perhaps the fact that Lilith was the only one of the three of them who couldn't do any form of magic at all made he feel like this.
”Ummmmm… Sarah... none of the stuff in here is… like… giving me evil looks, right?”
Selene and Sarah both laugh a little bit as Sarah holds Lilith closely to comfort her.
”Nothing more than when we used to hang around Selene’s shop. It’s just stuff, hunny. We’re just browsing around anyway.”
Something catches Lilith’s eye as she suddenly becomes excited, dragging Sarah down one of the aisles and points frantically at a set of Teddy bears. One of them having a dark, almost smoke gray fur and the other having a very bright, light tan fur. Aside from the coloring differences, the bears are identical.
”Sarahhhhhhhh!!! OH MY GOD!!! I want them! Please?! Look how super cute they are! Can we get them? Please? PLEASE?! I'll do the thing that you like tonight if you say yes!”
Lilith grabs hold of her wife's hands, tracing her thumb nails around the inside of her palms. Lilith knew full well that Sarah loved it when she did this and she always got her way when she did so.
”Please?”
Sarah shivers a bit as Lilith does that to her and of course she nods her head.
”I’ll get them for you baby.”
Lilith’s eyes are bright and happy as Sarah collects the bears for her wife. However, Selene notices this and walks up to them both.
”Sarah, what are you doing? Put those back!”
Sarah narrows her eyebrows a bit at Selene, confused.
”But … Lilith wants them. They’re just a couple of teddy bears.”
Selene shakes her head profoundly.
”You of all people Sarah … you should know that anything in one of these stores isn’t ordinary. I know you love Lilith but … she isn’t a witch. She cannot contain such power.”
Sarah continues to argue in favor of her wife.
”What power? They are stuffed bears … you and I both know you’ve sold antiques that had nothing to do with witchcraft.”
”I know from experience that there is power within those bears. They are familiars, Sarah. They are not meant for someone without the knowledge of how to contain them.”
Sarah sighs, looking agitated as she places the bears back onto the shelf and looks at her wife with sorrowful eyes.
”I really did wanna get them for you.”
Lilith gasps as she watches Sarah put the bears away again and looks across at Selene almost with an angry look on her face.
”But… look how cute they are! No way they're evil!”
Selene and Sarah continue to converse about the bears until Selene realizes she is running late for her convention.
”I will call you as soon as I am finished. Just please, heed my warning Sarah. You know I would never tell you something if it wasn’t important.”
Sarah nods and within seconds of Selene leaving she grabs the bears back off of the shelf and brings them to the counter, paying for them and handing them to her wife.
”I love her but, she’s so overprotective sometimes. I mean come on … it’s teddy bears.”
Lilith cuddles with her new bears as she heads out of the shop with Sarah.
”You don't ACTUALLY think we should be worried, right?”
She pauses and gasps a bit.
”What if they’re like Chucky? That movie gave me nightmares for MONTHS!”
Sarah laughs as she kisses her wife on the cheek.
”Probably more like Teddy Ruxpin. Come on babe, you love bears. Selene is just being overly concerned.”
LATER THAT NIGHT
The couple relax at home as the sit on their sofa watching a movie together. Lilith cuddled up into Sarah and again tracing her thumb nails over Sarah’s palms.
”I didn’t forget what I said today … as soon as we go into the bedroom I will show you how happiful you’ve made me today.”
Sarah giggles some more as Lilith continues to tease her and the two watch the movie.
”I’m really looking forward to that! But, we can’t stay up all night this time … we do have work to do. Tomorrow we HAVE to hit the gym so we can make an example of Ubertaker and Jam G on Monday.”
She leans over and kisses Lilith, almost ready to just abandon the movie and head into the bedroom with her right now.
”No more playing around at work … we have to make an example. Leave them laying. Then we can come home and do the things we want to do.”
She winks at Lilith.
”Sarah… come on. I think it's safe to say that even if stayed home all week long just eating nothing but cookies and watching chick flicks we'd STILL beat the stuffing outta those two muppets!”
Sarah laughs and nods as she leans her head against Lilith’s shoulder.
”I guess you’re right. Alright, let’s finish the movie and then you can put those thumbs of yours to good use.”
She comments slyly to her wife and Lilith’s face forms a huge grin. Lilith is about to make another seductive remark to her wife when she suddenly hears something. It sounds like a whisper and she can’t exactly tell where it’s coming from.
”Hurt them! Kill them! Make them suffer!”
Lilith starts looking around, VERY confused by what is going on.
"Violence! Destruction! Jam G, Ubertaker! Punish them!”
Lilith scratches her head a bit looking at her wife extremely puzzled.
”Did you hear that? I think I must have left the TV on upstairs…”
Sarah is half paying attention as she was watching the movie. But she glances up at Lilith and isn’t entirely sure what’s going on.
”Babe, we’re gonna miss the best part. I didn’t hear anything, no.”
Lilith just shrugs her shoulders as she settles back down with Sarah, cuddling into her.
”Sorry… it was… nothing”
The two continue to watch the movie, snuggling into each other and overall just enjoying one another’s company. But then, Lilith again hears a voice, this time much louder than the previous time.
”Blood must be spilled. You will rip the beating heart from their chests. Devour their souls!”
Lilith immediately sits forward and stands up out of the sofa, causing Sarah to fall sideways into where Lilith had just been sitting as the brunette looks around the room quite angrily.
”Okay you HAD to hear that, Sarah. What are you doing?”
Sarah pulls herself back up after landing in Lilith’s place on the couch. She too stands up, looking oddly at her wife.
”I didn’t hear anything. Babe, are you okay? Maybe we shouldn’t finish the movie then? Wanna just go upstairs?”
Lilith holds her head to the side a bit looking over at Sarah. There was no way she didn't hear it, it was almost as loud as the two of them talking right now.
”Sarah if this is some kinda joke I don't think it's funny. Please stop it.”
Sarah takes hold of her wife’s hands and looks sincerely into her beautiful eyes.
”Hunny .. I promise you I am not doing anything. Let’s just go upstairs, okay? Maybe we’ve had enough television for today.”
”I… I guess. Maybe I'm just tired. You're okay if we don't have sexy time tonight, right? I'm sorry, baby.”
Sarah nods her head and smiles, leading her wife upstairs as they pass by Lilith’s trio of Teddy bears. What neither of them had noticed was the look of concern on Lilith’s original teddy bear’s face as he sits there beside the two newcomers where Lilith had left him. There was something off about these bears … if only Teddy could get that message to Lilith.
In today’s fast paced world that doesn’t seem like a very long time.
