It was a cold winter night as a young, six year old, Lilith sits on her hard, extremely uncomfortable bed. She'd just watched yet another family come and go with another girl, once again not giving her a single bit of attention.
Lilith sighs as she lays back on the bed, her teddy bear by her side as always. Had Lilith been a sadder child she would have wished for friends but the truth was her teddy bear was the only friend she needed, and had ever had. She couldn't remember where or how she got him, all she knew was that he had always been by her side.
Lilith: I don't get it, Teddy. How come they NEVER want to come see me? They always go to all the other girls but never meā¦ not a single time. I'm starting to think that those mean Nuns are behind this. I bet they don't even tell them I'm here! I mean, I'm cute, right?
Lilith looked across at her bear for an answer, she didn't get one. Of course she didn't, he was made out of fabric. Unfortunately for Lilith, teddy bears did not talk.
Lilith: I wish you were real, Teddy. I wish that you could talk and cuddle me and could just take me far far away from this horrible place.
Lilith sighs as she cuddles into her bear and falls asleep.
Four Years Later
Lilith had lived at the Saint Vincentās Orphanage for Girls for as long as she could remember. Year after year had gone by and year after year she watched all of the other children be rescued by loving families. She was by far, the longest resident of the Catholic childrenās home. Rain beats down heavily at the windowsill as Lilith gazes outside. A car pulls away from the drive as another girl was whisked away to a better life. Here Lilith remained in her plain, modest bedroom. Once more she was passed up.
The saddened young girl didnāt know anything about herself. What had happened to her parents? Even what her name was. Lilith was the name bestowed upon her by the nuns, and they certainly didnāt like her very much. She was too young and too naive to understand why they chose Lilith. But that was the nicest name they called her. Usually it was demon child or unholy spawn. Horrible, terrible names.
Lilithās thoughts of despair as she watches the new family head out into their perfect lives was interrupted by the sounds of a large bell ringing throughout the halls. This meant it was dinner time. Lilith certainly didnāt like the food here, but if you didnāt head down and eat on time, you didnāt eat at all. Lilith liked feeling hungry a lot less than she didnāt like the food so she sighed and began to make her way down to the mess hall.
Lilith made her way into the large hall, it seemed whenever she came in here there were less and less children present. It worried Lilith that one day she would literally be the only one left. Not that the other girls were ever nice to her. Lilith spent the majority of her time hidden away in her room so she could pretend that she was anywhere but in this orphanage.
Lilith sighs as she looked at the silver dinner trolleys, the smell of the food was awful.
Lilith: Urgh, maybe i should just starve myselfā¦
Sister Judith Anne: I heard thatā¦ā¦. Lilith.
One of the meanest Nuns had overheard what she'd just said as she said Lilithās name in the coldest way possible.
Lilith: I'm sorry, Sister Judith Anne, I'm sure whatever is for dinner is just lovely.
Lilith realized what she'd said came out really sarcastic but she did not mean for it to be this way.
Sister Judith Anne: Excuse me? Was that sarcasm I heard in your voice?!
Lilith paused for a moment trying her absolute hardest not to sound sarcastic in her response.
Lilith: No Sister Judith Anne, I'm sorry.
Sister Judith Anne: Right, on with you then, demon child.
Lilith sighed again as she carried on, picking up one of the silver metal trays and stepping up to the dinner lady was serving out the foodā¦ if you could call it that. Without even looking up at the raven haired girl the dinner lady slopped what could only be described as being a weird grey lumpy mess onto her tray. Lilith was disgusted.
Lilith: Th-thanksā¦
Lilith turned and walked away, there was no more food to be given. No dessert, not even any fruit. The fact Lilith wished she'd had an apple to enjoy really spoke volumes as Lilith didnāt particularly even like them but they were miles better than whatever this gray goop was.
Lilith sat at one of the tables, the only table in the whole hall which was empty, and tried to enjoy her food. She dug her fork into the goop and tried her hardest to imagine it was anything else as she took a bite. Lilith couldn't help but cringe as she tried to swallow it.
Lilith: Oh god that's nasty.
No matter how many times sheād eaten this slop, it never got any better. But she had to eat something, and this was it. Before she could even begin the task of forcing this all down, she is hit in the back of the head with something soft. She reaches back into her hair and removes some of the same slimy goop she was eating. She turns around to see a few of the other girls laughing at her. They point and mock her.
Group of Girls: Weirdo, weirdo .. never leaving here, no! No mommy or daddy, youāll never have a family!
Lilith gets up from the table, crying and runs out of the mess hall toward her room. She was so upset that the thought of cleaning the slop from her hair never even crossed her mind. She knew they were right. Everyone but her gets adopted. The girls donāt let up as she runs off. They shout at her as she leaves, adding more hurtful comments.
Group of Girls: Awwww poor baby. So ugly, disgusting ā¦ no one will ever love you!
Lilith runs into her room, slamming the door behind her as she sobs uncontrollably. She grabs hold of her teddy bear and clings to him.
Lilith: Whyyyyy, why do they all hate me? Why does nobody love me? Whyyy-yyy-yyy-yy?
She wails out, crying between every syllable. Lilith sits in the corner of her room with her teddy bear and cries herself to sleep.
Six months later.
The remaining girls from the orphanage have all gone. Every one of them adopted and taken into a loving home. All of them except for Lilith. She was the only child who remained. She sat in her room, truly alone for the first time. No new orphans were being brought in. The numbers had been dwindling for some time and Lilithās greatest fear had become a reality. She was the only orphan remaining. Families had stopped coming nearly a month ago after the only other girl who was left with her had been rescued. It was as if no one knew she was there, or that no one cared. Everything that was said to her by those girls was right. Nobody could ever love her. Nobody wanted her.
Downstairs in the main office the Arch Bishop of the district was on site unbeknownst to Lilith. He was having a meeting with the nuns who were responsible for the orphanage.
Arch Bishop: Everything is in order. All of the children have been fostered as of a month ago. Weāre just collecting their files for record. City officials are officially closing the building down tomorrow. Demolition begins next week.
Sister Judith Anne: Yes, of course your eminence.
The large lockbox of files is handed over to him that represented all of the children who had come and gone through the orphanage. He collects them and is about to be on his way. But he remembers that he needed to document the number of files on site. He opens the box, counting the files and is satisfied.
Arch Bishop: Alright, everything appears to be in order. Let me record this so I donāt forget.
He opens a few drawers in search of a pen. Sister Judith Anne looks horrified as he begins rummaging.
Sister Judith Anne: Let me get one for you.
She offers. The Arch Bishop notices the concern in her tone.
Arch Bishop: Is there something wrong?
Sister Judith Anne: Certainly not. Everything is just wonderful.
The Arch Bishop isnāt convinced and he starts to press a bit more as he continues to look through the drawers.
Arch Bishop: If there was something that I needed to know, you would tell me, wouldnāt you Sister?
Sister Judith Anne: Oh ā¦ of course I would.
He continues through the drawers and the sister is growing more and more nervous. He senses this and she almost jumped in his way as he went to open a final drawer. With a stern look he backs her off and opens the drawer, only to find a single orphan file that had been kept away from the rest. The Arch Bishop is aghast at his findings.
Arch Bishop: There is still a girl residing here?! How could you keep such a thing from me?!
Sister Judith Anne: We tried your eminence, we have. But that child has been cursed since the day she came here almost ten years ago. Born of sin she was! She has the devilās mark upon her.
Arch Bishop: Nonsense! She is but a child, put under your care and you spew this hogwash? Where is she?
Sister Judith Anne: Up in her room. The little demon rarely comes out from it.
Arch Bishop: When the diocese finds out about this itāll be all of our heads! Thereās not enough time for a transfer and you have made certain that an adoption is out of the question. What are we to do now?
Sister Judith Anne: She is of an age to learn for herself. As you said, the diocese will have our heads ā¦ IF they were to find out. Perhaps we can just have this little matter ā¦ go away on its own.
Arch Bishop: Are you actually suggesting we just abandon the child? Just turn away as if she didnāt exist and leave her for the streets?
The Sister was cold, but persuasive in her own arguments.
Sister Judith Anne: There isnāt any time. What else are we to do?
The Arch Bishop ponders this option for several moments as he falls back into the chair with a sigh.
Arch Bishop: Do as you must. But I tell you now, Sister ... you will take whatever resources that remain and relinquish them to the girl. I will not have a death on my conscience.
The Sister seems overly pleased with the Bishopās decision and nods anxiously.
Sister Judith Anne: Yes of course. We shant leave her without a fighting chance.
The Following day ā¦ Closing Day.
Lilithās bags had all been packed, well, one bag had been packed, she didn't have much stuff. Only a couple of changes of clothes and a couple of cuddly toys sheād found left in some of the other girls rooms.
Lilith turns to look at her bed as she sighs to herself, her teddy bear sat on her pillow.
Lilith: I don't know where I'm supposed to goā¦ what I'm supposed to do. Do you think there are shelters out there? I've never heard of themā¦ but, I meanā¦ I can't just live on the streets! I'll freeze to death! What should I do, Teddy?
Lilith pauses as she looks at her bear and then shrugs her shoulders reaching down to pick him up.
Lilith: I don't know why I'm asking you, you can't talkā¦ I wish you couldā¦ maybe then I wouldn't be so lonelyā¦
The only resources that Lilith had at this point was a total of twenty pounds. That is what the sisters left her with despite there being well over five hundred pounds remaining. The nuns elected to keep that for themselves. This might get Lilith some food for a day or two, but not much else.
She wanders along the streets with her bag and is completely lost on what to do for shelter, or practically anything else. After wandering around aimlessly for several hours, young Lilith finds herself at the London piers. She hadnāt the faintest clue what she was going to do, but maybe just watching the waves ripple would take her mind off of it for a while.
Lilith: Maybe if I can just find an adult one of them will be nice enough to help meā¦
Lilith looks down at her teddy who was still in her hand, hand in hand with Lilith. Lilith just nods her head as if she knew what the answer would be without anyone even saying anything.
Lilith: No one will care. Adults aren't nice people they just want me to stay away from themā¦
A single tear runs down Liliths cheek as she thinks about how not a single person in the whole world cared around her. She was completely alone and cold, very cold, freezing even as it had started to snow. Little snowflakes settling into her jet black hair almost changing its color.
Lilith: I need to find someplace warm, I will literally turn into a Snowgirl if I stay out in this.
Lilith gets up from her seat on the end of the pier, looking around. It started to get dark and wandering back through the city streets and alleyways would not be a safe option. Down at the other end of the pier, Lilith notices a very large ship that didnāt seem to have anyone near it. It likely wasnāt being used right now so it was her best option.
Lilith: Oh I bet itās warm inside! Come on Teddy, letās go!
Lilith did her best to sneak towards and onto the ship without anyone seeing her, crouching down a little bit and tip toeing around as best she could. A few men were inside a little hut next to a barrier but they didn't notice her as Lilith pinned herself against the wall and slid across it. As soon as her path was clear she sprinted up towards the ship and snuck inside a large open door on the ship which read ācargoā above it. Here she found that she was surrounded by huge boxes all of which had been tied down.
Lilith: I wonder what's in them?
She was curious as to the contents, but the large section of rope securing them was too much to undo. After a little bit of prodding, she abandons that idea and heads off to find somewhere comfortable to settle down for the night. After a while of walking around below deck, she found that the ship had a kitchen, with plenty of canned and boxed food stocked on its shelves. Water, some fruit and vegetables and even some bread. Even the canned food looked far more appetizing than anything sheād ever had eaten at the orphanage. Hungry, thirsty and excited, she grabs a few items to prepare her dinner. Of course, she didnāt know how to cook, so luckily for her these were just some āopen and eatā type things. At the very least, some of them could have been microwaved ā¦ if she knew how to find that even.
Lilith: Oh Teddy, itās like it was left here just for me!
Lilith ate the food as quickly as she could, it was if she'd been starved for days. Eventually after a short while Lilith laid back on the cold ship floor, teddy and a bunch of opened food containers by her side. Lilith cuddled up to her bear just trying to get some warmth and quickly fell asleep.
Several hours had passed by the time Lilith woke up, she felt like she'd just had the best nights sleep ever despite her surroundings. She sat up and looked down at the empty food containers and back at Teddy who was sat up next to her.
Lilith: You're hungry too, huh? I wonder if they have any breakfast cereal in that kitchen.
Lilith stood up onto her feet and immediately felt uneasy, like she was moving despite standing perfectly still.
Lilith: Errrrrā¦ what?
Suddenly, she hears some voices coming from down the corridor from where she was. She quickly hides herself out of sight as a few crew members walk by, talking casually.
Sailor #1:Two weeks on the Atlantic. Thatās nothing, kid. Weāre heading down through the canal all the way to the west coast. Dropping port in LA. Ten weeks on this bad boy.
Sailor #2: Aye, looking forward to it.
The older sailor didnāt sound British at all, he was definitely from another place. But that isnāt what concerned Lilith. It was the mention of two weeks on the Atlantic ā¦ did he mean ocean? And that wasnāt even the worst part. He said ten weeks total, but to go where?! Lilith began to panic now but had to remain quiet until the men were long gone.
Lilith: Did he just sayā¦ what I thought he did?!
Lilith ran back down to the kitchen area she had been in earlier, she noticed before that there was a small window just at the top of it. That would definitely help her figure out where she was. Lilith climbs on top of one of the cabinets and stands on her tip toes looking out the window.
Lilith: Ohā¦ myā¦ Godā¦
Lilithās jaw drops as she continues to look out the window. There was nothing out there but ocean and huge waves splashing against the ship as it sailed ahead.
Lilith: What have I done?!
To be continued ...
Lilith sighs as she lays back on the bed, her teddy bear by her side as always. Had Lilith been a sadder child she would have wished for friends but the truth was her teddy bear was the only friend she needed, and had ever had.
