They say that looks can be deceiving. That you never truly can tell what lies beyond the facade without stepping inside and peeling away the layers. Looking at the exterior of this neat, two story, middle class home you would never be able to guess what went on inside. A neatly manicured lawn, wrapped in a white picket fence, nestled in the quiet suburbs of Los Angeles. This was surely the dream sought out by most people. The picture perfect fairy tale home that countless women strive for. However, this home, masked by the pristine surroundings and peaceful outward appearance was hardly a dream come true. In reality, nothing comes without a price. We continue to observe the warm and cozy looking structure as a flat bed pick-up truck pulls into the driveway. An man of average height exits the vehicle. He is burly with strong arms, but without tone. The type of build common among laborers. His flannel shirt is tossed over his shoulder, and he carries a hard hat with him. The once white tank top he is wearing, now covered in soot, paint and other elements that have soiled it, reveals his gut, which hangs over his belt. This was what was commonly referred to as a "beer belly", and suggesting that this man was a drinker was nothing short of an understatement. He makes his way up the drive and towards the house. He steps inside after what appears to have been a long day at work. Now the facade would be broken, as what takes place inside does not mirror the exterior facade in the slightest.
The home is mostly dark, and the clock sitting on the wall tells us that it is nearly 8 PM. Sunlight still prevails outside on this summer evening, but it's rays are no longer strong enough to illuminate the home's interior. The only lights on at this time were that of the television, which was going. And some light shines from the kitchen where the man would head. In the kitchen, an attractive woman warms a plate of food as she greets him.
Elizabeth: Welcome home, Hun.
He ignores his wife, heading instead to the refrigerator where he grabs hold of a few bottles of beer. He only then nods to her.
Alec: What's for dinner, Liz?
Elizabeth: Your favorite...meatloaf.
Alec: Bring it in when it's hot. I'm watching the fights.
Alec heads back into the living room, he sits down in his leather recliner, just a few feet from the television, placing one bottle of his beer on the end table beside him, and he cracks the other one, taking large gulps as he nearly finishes it straight away. To the right of him, an air conditioner blows cool air on him amidst the heat of the day's work that he's returned from. He finishes down his first beverage, tossing the bottle into a box that is propped near his reclining arm chair. He quickly cracks open the next bottle, taking another swig. Elizabeth returns from the kitchen with his dinner, and two more bottles of beer that she sets down beside him on the table. He stares ahead at the television, not acknowledging his wife once again. He swallows down more of his beverage, and as she finishes setting down his dinner and more drinks, she comments to him.
Elizabeth: Hun, we're out of milk for the morning.
Alec finishes off the second beverage, also tossing it into the box beside his chair. He doesn't take his eyes away from the television screen as he replies, uncaring.
Alec: What do want me to do about it?
Elizabeth: We need it for the kids. How are they going to eat before school?
Again his gaze does not move as he replies condescendingly.
Alec: You popped the little fuckers out, you deal with it. Now do ya mind? I'm trying to watch the fights here.
Elizabeth: I need money. You know I don't make enough at the diner.
Alec: That is NOT my problem. I never wanted those two little bitches Liz.
Elizabeth: And you think that I did?!! What the hell happened to us Alec? What happened to the way it was before?
Alec now stands up, as the argument ensues.
Alec: You want to know what happened Liz? I'll tell you what happened. You got knocked up, and now you want me to take care of everything. Sarah needs this, Rachel needs that What about what I need Liz? Have you ever thought about that?
Elizabeth: You have more than enough to provide for your daughters!! Instead you just want to....drink all your money away!!
Alec raises his hand, ready to strike his own wife as suddenly, the doorbell rings. He lowers his hand and takes a peek through the window, growing increasingly angry now.
Alec: turning to Liz Did you call her Liz? Did you call your fucking sister over here?
Elizabeth: No.
Alec: You had better get rid of them. I'm not in the mood for her shit.
Elizabeth nods as she heads to the door, opening it to her sister, Vanessa and Vanessa's husband, Michael. The two walk straight inside before Elizabeth can say anything. Vanessa looks on in disgust as she sees Alec, who had returned to his recliner, surrounded by beer.
Vanessa: Oh how surprising
Elizabeth: Now isn't a good time.
Vanessa: Oh I think it's a perfect time. Where are the girls?
Elizabeth sighs, lowering her head as she points towards the stairs. Alec stares ahead at the television with anger in his eyes. His night of getting drunk was being interrupted. We see in the shadows of the stairs, an eight year old Sarah and five year old Rachel had been watching on the entire time. The quickly and quietly head back to their room as their Aunt Vanessa and Uncle Michael head upstairs to see them. Vanessa reaches the top of the stairs and turns on the light, walking towards the two girls' room. She opens the door, turning on the light there. Inside was just two mattresses on the floor where the girls were laying. And a single dresser where they would keep their clothing. Vanessa's mouth falls agape as she and Michael turn back towards the stairs and she begins speaking on her way down.
Vanessa: My God what the hell is wrong with you?
She quickly gets down the stairs, and of course this area was full of things to keep Alec comfortable and occupied. Yet despite having the money, his own daughters had nothing for themselves.
Vanessa: It has to be 200 fucking degrees up there, you have no air, no fan? Nothing for those girls!!!
She turns to Elizabeth.
Vanessa: You let this happen?
Elizabeth: I...
Vanessa: Lizzie you may have decided to marry this jerk off, but now you have kids, and they are being neglected. Mattresses on the floor?!!! I know there is enough money coming into this house to take care of them. It's not like you're poor.
Michael shakes his head as he looks at Alec in disgust. Alec is ignoring everything and just sits there, gulping his beer. Vanessa heads into the kitchen, looking through the cabinets and the refrigerator.
Vanessa: For Christ's sake! There is nothing here for those girls. You let him do this? Lizzie you are just as bad as him. Where is the food? All I see if fucking alcohol!!!
Elizabeth sighs again, she looks down in shame, knowing that her husband was becoming increasingly agitated.
Vanessa: I'm taking those kids to mom's for the night. They shouldn't have to live like this...no one should. I swear to God on Monday I'm gonna see about getting them taken out of this house.
She walks back into the living room, staring at Alec in disgust as he drinks his beer.
Vanessa: Oh you'd love that wouldn't you? You piece of shit!!
Vanessa smacks Alec in the back of his head and he stands up quickly as if about to strike her, but Michael steps in his way and stares at him sternly.
Michael: You might get away with abusing your wife. But if you lay one finger on mine, I will kick the ever living shit out of you. So sit back in your little chair, and drink your goddamn beer.
Vanessa, heads to the foot of the stairs.
Vanessa: Sarah, Rachel, get your things sweeties. We're going to Grandma's tonight.
Alec sits back in his recliner as Michael was completely ready to do what was necessary. Alec again swallows some more of his beer. The young girls head down the stairs, each having some clothing with them as Vanessa gets them outside and asks them to wait. She then turns to Elizabeth.
Vanessa: If you're going to mom's with us..let's go. Otherwise, I'm sure she'll be happy to hear what the hell you're letting go on in here.
Elizabeth knew if she stayed there, Alec would beat her for what occurred, so she slowly walks toward the door. Alec now begins to comment.
Alec: That's right leave. Run away bitch. Go to your mom's with those little bitches.
Vanessa: You're a fucking disgrace Alec. You don't deserve my sister or those two precious girls.
Alec: Get out of my house.
Vanessa: Oh trust me asshole, it's with pleasure.
Vanessa and Michael lead Elizabeth outside as well, and Vanessa slams the door behind her as she gathers the girls, and they climb into Michael's minivan and leave Alec there, drinking his beer, and seething in anger. We fade out here.
March 27th 2008 - Tujunga, California
A beautiful Friday afternoon. Sunny skies, a cool breeze. Sarah's twelfth birthday seemed picture perfect in every way. Of course, she wasn't at home just yet. It was now 5:30 PM as Sarah stepped outside of the now closing Tujunga Branch Library. As she began walking the few blocks back to her home, she would run into a schoolmate who was riding her bike outside of her own home. The girl waves and pedals toward Sarah.
Girl: Hey Sarah, today's your birthday right?
Sarah nods, but didn't seem completely enthusiastic about it.
Sarah: What's up Lisa?
Lisa: Well Happy Birthday.
Sarah: Thanks, I guess.
Lisa: Doing anything?
Sarah: Just trying to find something else to do before going home.
Lisa: I thought you were gonna be living with your aunt?
Sarah: She's been saying that for years now. It's never gonna happen.
Lisa: Well you can come hang out with me if you want?
Sarah: Maybe later.
Lisa: Okay, well. I'll see you in school on Monday.
Sarah continues walking, her book bag slung over her shoulder as she makes her way down the block. Finally approaching her house, she knew what the scene inside would be like already. Her father drinking as usual, and her mother doing nothing about it. She makes her way up to the door, and little did she know what was going to be different about today.
Inside, Alec sits, watching the television, comfortably seated in his recliner, surrounded by numerous bottles of beer and booze. Elizabeth sits in the kitchen, now having become a heavy smoker, she nervously fidgets with a cigarette and lighter, her hands shaking as a constant symptom of her overall skittishness. A nine year old Rachel runs around downstairs, playing with a doll she'd gotten from her grandmother. This was her means of escape from reality. Rachel, unknowingly runs around in front of the television, blocking Alec's view which enrages him and he lashes out at his daughter.
Alec: You're in the fucking way! Liz, get this little shit out of here. She's starting to piss me off!!
Elizabeth calls out from the other room, unenthusiastically
Elizabeth: Coming Dear.
Rachel stops running as she hears her father yelling, and tears fall from her face.
Rachel: I'm sorry, Daddy.
Alec ignores her and just motions her to get away, as she does, her doll, accidentally knocks into Alec's beer, spilling it. He jumps out of his chair in anger, immediately removing his belt. A heavy leather one, with large studs. Young Rachel's eyes widen as she begins to run away from her father.
Rachel: Mommy!!!
Alec: Come here you little bitch!!
Alec knocks over the entire table as he lumbers forward after his daughter, intent on beating her with the belt. Rachel runs to her mother and holds her tightly, wanting protection from her father. Elizabeth comforts her daughter as she nervously looks to her husband.
Elizabeth: Alec, it was just an accident.
Alec: Liz, don't get me started.
Elizabeth: She's just a child!!
Alec: She's going to learn some respect!! She knows not to walk into my goddamn space!
Alec backhands Elizabeth who stumbles back, falling into the kitchen table and onto the floor. Rachel screams as Her father grabs hold of her, raising the belt in his hands. The front door opens as the commotion continues, and Sarah walks into the ongoing violence. She walks into the house, seeing her mother on the floor, and her father about to beat her sister. Sarah reaches for one of the empty bottles left by Alec, and she hurdles the bottle at him with all of her might. It crashes into the side of his head and shatters, blood trickles from his temple and ear as Sarah screams at her father.
Sarah: STAY AWAY FROM HER!!!
Alec lets go of Rachel as he is stunned. He reaches up to the side of his face and looks down at his hand to see his own blood soaking it. In anger he starts towards Sarah.
Alec: Oh you little bitch you're gonna get it!!
Sarah picks up another bottle and throws it at him, this one smacking him in the face as it shatters, and now he is bleeding heavily. Although dazed, he continues to move forward towards Sarah. His paces slows, and with his loss of blood, combined with his alcohol consumption, he becomes dizzy, and falls back into his chair. His eyes are glazed over. Elizabeth now rushes to her husband's side, instead of to her daughters. She looks at Sarah with resentment.
Elizabeth: Look what you've done! You know what's going to happen now. Look what you've done!!!
Alec, speaks quietly as his energy level is drained and his glazed over eyes still attempt to stare at his own daughter with malice.
Alec: I....want....that bitch....out.....of my...house.
Sarah goes to a very frightened Rachel and leads her upstairs as her mother now yells at her.
Elizabeth: Just leave Sarah. Just leave! You made it worse!!! YOU Sarah, you made this worse. Just....just GET OUT!!
Sarah heads upstairs with Rachel, tucking her into bed. Rachel's eyes begin to swell up as she looks at her sister.
Rachel: P...please don't go. I...I need you.
Sarah brushes her hand over Rachel's forehead.
Sarah: I know you do. But they won't let me stay now. I'll come back for you once I get us someplace to stay.
Rachel: Pwomise?
Sarah: I promise.
Rachel reaches up, giving Sarah a hug. We can see the doubt in Sarah's eyes as she wondered how she would take care of herself and her sister at such a young age. Rachel moves to the corner of her bed in the fetal position as she tries to go to sleep. Sarah begins packing her things. When she is finished, she looks at her sister one last time before heading down the stairs and out the front door, leaving Alec, Elizabeth...and very regrettably, Rachel behind. We again fade out here.
Two Months Later- Los Angeles, California
We watch as a man rushes out of a bakery, running at full speed. He dodges in and out of the crowds of people on the street.
Man: Hey! Hey you...get back here!!
Ahead of him, we see young Sarah, running her fastest, carrying a bag of goods in her hands. She darts in and out between people, turning corners, obviously trying to lose the man. The bakery employee is gaining on her she she continues to run, pulling a trash can down behind her in an attempt to slow him down, she turns another corner, down an alley. The man gets tripped up by the can and loses some distance on her. As she runs down the alley, passing a building, suddenly, from a smaller alley, a hand reaches out and grabs her, covering her mouth as she is pulled into the darkness. The bakery employee now makes it to the alley, where he slows down to look for Sarah. In the darker alley behind one of the buildings Sarah struggles.
Man's Voice:(whispering) Shhhh. He be gone soon. Hush now child.
The voice held a thick accent to it. And Sarah, still was unsure of what was going on, but remained quiet. The bakery employee searches around for a few minutes before giving up and heading back towards his shop. The man now releases his hand from over Sarah's mouth and let's her go. She turns and looks at the man, and she looks completely pissed off, yet nervous as she was still just a kid.
Sarah: What's your problem?
Man: You goin' bout'it all wrong d'ere.
Sarah: Excuse me?
Man: You want'in to eat no? Dat's da wrong way to go bout'it. You get's trouble real fast dat way.
The man steps into the light now and we can see him. He is a dark skinned man, wearing tattered clothing, and had unkempt hair. It was apparent that he lived on the streets as well. He offers a hand to Sarah.
Man: Me name is Kojo...Kojo Jones. Me apol'gies for start'lin ya d'ere child.
Sarah slowly reaches out her hand to the man, still wondering what any of this was about.
Sarah: And what do you care....about what I'm doing?
Kojo smiles warmly.
Kojo: It be survival of the fitt'st. I know me ways when me see it. I got's child o' me own dar'lin. Nat'lie come 'ere. It be okay now.
From back in the shadows, emerges a young girl, around the same age as Sarah. She looks on, confused as well as she steps forward and stands near her father.
Kojo: Nat'lie say hello to dis garl. What ya say yar name was now?
Sarah: I'm Sarah.
Natalie: Nice to be meetin ya d'ere Sarah.
Natalie looks up at her father
Natalie: Papa she be's white. Why she no' home wit her rich folk?
Kojo: Nat'lie, not all white folk be weal'ty.
He looks to Sarah.
Kojo: Where be yar folks little one?
Sarah: I don't have any parents. I live out here, on my own.
Kojo: Oh child, ya can' be out here like dat all on yar own. Come, we don' have much. But maybe keepin' ya's out of da heat for a bit see.
Sarah follows Natalie and Kojo back to a makeshift home behind the building. It is made with mostly cardboard, and has blankets stuffed inside to ease the uncomfortable, hard ground. Kojo and Natalie offer Sarah a place to stay, with them. And they take shelter under the home made tent. The three of them eat the pastries that Sarah had stolen. And with being exhausted, Sarah embraces the thought of sleep in the shade.
Natalie: You can sleep 'ere. Papa gon' get some o' dat dough.
Kojo: Aye. You two be gett'n rest. I come back, wit some green af'ter a while.
Sarah and Natalie rest. Despite being on the streets, the blankets, softening to Sarah, provided the best sleep she'd had in months. When she wakes up, Kojo is returning with a bag, a few items that he was able to purchase for the two girls. Some orange juice, cinnamon rolls and some hot, breakfast burritos he'd gotten from the vendor on his way. He smiles, handing Natalie and Sarah some food, and he sits with them to enjoy a meal. Sarah was surprised at this generosity of the man and his daughter. Kojo, a stranger was like more or a father to Sarah than her own ever was. After they finish eating, the three clean their small, meager area and begin walking. Sarah curious as to what they were to do next.
Sarah: So what now?
Kojo: I's gon' teach ya 'ow to survive out 'ere.
They travel the crowded streets as Kojo explains to Sarah the easier way of making money to survive on. He and Natalie had a system, where they would pickpocket strangers who were well off enough to not be affected by the theft. Sarah listened intently as he explained step by step each action they would need to take in order to obtain money. When he was finished, they spent some time searching the streets for their target for the day. It didn't take long to find him. A young man, well dressed, and well groomed pulls up to one of Los Angeles' upscale shops in a brand new porshe. He gets out of the car, talking on his phone and Kojo approaches as Sarah waits for her moment to strike.
Natalie: (to Sarah) Ya sure yar ready for dis?
Sarah nods as she keeps her focus on the man. Kojo now walks up to him.
Kojo: Good day to ya sir. Can ya spare some change fer a man? I need to get a meal fer me daugh'tar.
The man, brushes him off, being completely rude about it.
Man: Sorry buddy. I can't help you. Go ask a church or something.
Kojo: It's only a small bit o' change dat I askin'.
Man: I said get moving pal.
While Kojo speaks with the yuppy, Sarah quickly moves in behind him, quietly lifting his wallet, which goes unnoticed as the man is distracted by both his phone call, and Kojo. Once Sarah secures the wallet, she hurries back to her place with Natalie, out of sight. And Kojo abandons the distraction. Being sure to thank the man for his rudeness.
Kojo: Ya 'ave a good day now sir.
Kojo moves on as the yuppy walks to his destination, oblivious to his wallet being gone. The three walk back into the alley and find out what they have gotten. Sarah's eyes widen as she realizes just how much they've taken from the guy.
Sarah: There...has to be a thousand dollars in here!
Kojo: Dat is a good day indeed child. Be sure to be takin' da cash and t'row away da rest.
Natalie: Dat be a nice job d'ere garl. Ya's fitt'n right in wit us ha ha!
Sarah removes the cash from the man's wallet and discards the rest into the trash. The three now return to their makeshift tent to decide what necessities to spend the money on. Sarah had now learned how to pickpocket. But would it be enough to support her and Rachel? We fade out here once again.
October 2009- Los Angeles, California
It was just over a year now since Sarah, now thirteen years of age had learned the trade of the streets, thievery. However, as autumn was in full swing, mild in a city like Los Angeles, if there was even any autumn weather to speak of, Sarah found it difficult to earn as much in her ventures. Just a few months ago, Kojo had been arrested after he attempted a larger scale robbery. Natalie was taken away and brought to a juvenile detention facility after a witness identified her as her father's accomplice. Sarah managed to escape the scene unnoticed. But working alone was more difficult, and the profits were sometimes barely enough. Now she wandered the streets, it was just about noon and the hustle and bustle of the big city was in full swing. She blended in easily with the crowds. However, thievery was not on her mind at this time. She constantly wondered how her sister Rachel was coping inside of that house of madness. She knew that Rachel had probably given up hope, as Sarah herself realized she would probably never be able to return for her sister as she had promised. She wasn't making enough money, and had no place for her younger sister to stay. Sarah didn't know it, but all of this was about to change. She walked towards a stop light. Waiting along with everyone else to cross a busy street when she noticed a think envelope, peeking out of a woman's pocket. This envelope was very thick, and her trained eye could spot that there was money inside....lots of it. She moved forward slowly, and with a skilled hand, lifted the envelope from the woman. Just as Sarah was about to turn and disappear into the crowd, she was stunned as the woman, who never once looked back, began to speak.
Woman: Please be a dear and place that back where you found it young lady.
Sarah was completely surprised by this. It may have been possible that the thickness of the fold alerted the woman to her lifting it. But how did this woman know that it was a young girl who was taking it? How did she know without ever once turning around to see Sarah? The woman waits as Sarah, completely stunned, returns the envelope to its place.
Sarah: Look, I'm sorry. Just don't call the cops okay?
The woman turns around now to look at Sarah, she smiles warmly. Her hair is wild and wavy, a dark raven color. She wears clothing of vibrant colors, deep purples and reds, outlined with black and white. Around the woman's neck, a sparkling emblem of silver caught Sarah's eye among all else. The odd charm was something Sarah had never seen before. A five pointed star within a circle...a pentacle. The woman speaks to Sarah softly, with a kind a caring voice.
Woman: I am not going to call the police. I can sense a troubled spirit when I see it.
Sarah: Lady, you're crazy. Look, I gave you back your money. If you aren't calling the cops. I'm out of here.
Woman: You are in need of stability. Where will you go if you leave now? Back to the streets? Perhaps you may find someone who is not as forgiving as I. What will you do then?
Sarah is very confused and looks oddly at the woman.
Sarah: What is it you want?
Woman: It is not what I want that is at question. It is what you need. I am offering to help you. The choice to accept it is yours.
Sarah: Help me...how?
Woman: You need a place to stay, yes? And you obviously are in need of money. I can offer those both to you, legally.
Sarah: I'm not stupid, no one gives you anything for free.
Woman: Indeed you are correct. Which is why I am offering you a job, working for me. In exchange, I will give you a place to stay, food, and will pay you fairly for your work.
Sarah hesitates. This sounds far too suspicious to her. However, she nods and accepts the offer nonetheless. Knowing that her current means of survival were not cutting it. The woman offers her hand to Sarah.
Woman: What is your name dear?
Sarah: I'm Sarah.
Woman: Pleasure to meet you, I am Selene.
As the two become acquainted with one another, a bus arrives at the corner and lets off a few passengers. Selene and Sarah board the bus. Sarah taking a gamble as she heads to an unknown destination.
Later That Day- Sunland, California
Madame Selene's Occult Shop
As the two step off of the bus and begin walking just a few doors down. Sarah notices the shop. The same symbol which dangled around Selene's neck was prominently emblazoned into the storefront's awning. Selene removes a key from her pocket and opens the door to the shop, Sarah steps inside, with Selene just behind her, turning on the lights. Sarah is astonished at what she sees. Candles, oils, incense, charms among other things were neatly displayed everywhere. The shelves of the store were lined with books on the occult, witchcraft and the paranormal. Sarah had never seen anything like this before. Selene smiles as she notices Sarah's amazement.
Sarah: What is all of this?
Selene: Tools of the trade my dear.
Sarah: What trade?
Selene: Magick.
Sarah rolls her eyes and looks at Selene.
Sarah: Come on be serious. I'm not six, I don't believe in magic.
Selene: Most people are groomed to see the world in it's own mundane existence. It takes a special person to open their eyes to what lies beyond. Many things are possible when you let your mind explore what others cannot see.
Sarah: Okay, this settles it, you are crazy. I'm leaving.
Selene does not try to stop Sarah from leaving. Sarah returns to the door and opens it. Selene strikes a match, lighting a candle, as she does, an entire row of candles follows, seeming to light on their own. Sarah jumps back a bit, not believing what she just saw.
Sarah: How the HELL did you do that??!!
Selene again smiles warmly.
Selene: It's all a matter of having an openness with the world that surrounds you. Everything has a balance that acts as one. But only if you are willing to allow your spirit to connect with it. Leave if you wish. Or, you can stay, and I can teach you to see the world through clearer eyes.
Sarah hesitates, but her eagerness to learn new things draws her curiosity and she closes the door, remaining inside of the shop. Selene moves about, taking care of a few small duties, allowing Sarah some time to browse the store. Despite Sarah's earlier attempt to rob her, Selene leaves Sarah alone with the merchandise as she goes to the back of the store to put away her envelope. Sarah slowly walks through the shop, looking at everything. She flips through the pages of a few books quickly, just getting an idea of their contents before placing them back on the shelves. As she continues to browse, her eyes lock on a small glass casing, containing some charms. Inside there is a sterling silver necklace, almost identical to the one Selene wore. Sarah was in awe of the pentacle charm, and wished it was hers. Selene returns from the back to find Sarah taken with the charm.
Selene: You like that one?
Sarah nods her head.
Sarah: How much is it?
Selene moves behind the case, removing the charm. She then hands it to Sarah.
Selene: This one, is not for sale. It was waiting for the right person, and now she has come along.
Sarah: Wait. You're just...giving this to me?
Selene: It has chosen you. So go ahead, try it on. She smiles.
Sarah puts the necklace on, looking at herself in the mirror, she likes how the pentacle looks around her neck. She comments to Selene as she tries it on.
Sarah: So how does a piece of jewelry choose someone?
Selene: Each piece has a representation of power. A power that lies within each of us. Every one unique. Only when this aura of power matches, does the piece bare it's true meaning. That one, was meant for you.
Sarah is still a bit confused, but she was given this gift that she enjoyed, and wasn't about to argue with why she'd been given it.
Selene: There is a great power about you, a will of determination like none I have seen before. With knowledge, you will learn about yourself. You will embrace who you were meant to be. What you have been placed here to do.
Sarah: What do you mean? Placed here to do?
Selene hands Sarah a book, with various Pagan symbols on the cover. The book itself is black, and the symbols sparkling in silver, embroidered on it's cover. Sarah takes hold of the book, looking down at it.
Sarah: So you want me to learn...witchcraft?
Selene: That will come in due time. This book, is about an exploration of yourself. The inner spirit that lies within. Witchcraft can be taken to a place of light, or it can be taken to a dark place. That choice is found within each of us. And you must find it Sarah. That book will show you how. It will find your innermost peace...but it will also show you the darkness. Each of us has a balance of good and evil within our spirit. You must find that balance. Sarah, in order to truly prepare yourself for what you are destined. You must explore all that is good within yourself....but also, you must face what lies within you, that is evil.
We look at Sarah's deep emerald green eyes as they stare down at the cover of the book. She looks on intently, contemplating what she would do. Wondering what she would find within her own self exploration. As we close in on her eyes, there is a flash in them of peace, and serenity...but this is also followed by a flash of dark. A cold, emotionless stare. Our scene fades to black.
To be continued...
